The 4 biggest mysteries the new Vera Rubin Observatory could solve

No telescope has basked in the night sky quite like this before. Here's what it could reveal about the universe.

Just two days to go before the public reveal of the first images!

A Glimpse of CLIMSO

Explanation:
A tantalizing glimpse inside this dome was captured after sunset at the mountain top Pic Du Midi Observatory in the French Pyrenees. But while most are just beginning their work at sunset, this observatory's day was done. The instrument looming within is CLIMSO (for Christian Latouche IMageur Solaire), dedicated to exploring dynamic phenomena across the surface and atmosphere of the Sun. To image the solar atmosphere or corona, CLIMSO uses coronagraphs. Developed by French astronomer Bernard Lyot in the 1930s, coronagraphs block light from the center of the telescope beam to create an artificial solar eclipse and allow a continuous view of the solar corona. In this surreal twilight scene above a sea of clouds, the dome's interior was revealed by the single, long exposure as the open slit rotated across the field of view. eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/OH/OH201

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will map the entire southern sky every few nights

The team will unveil the inaugural image on 23 June; in the meantime, the researchers are keeping quiet about what it shows. “We’ve been very serious about keeping it capped, so that we can do a big reveal”...

Hi Mastodon! 👋
We are the OST (Overwhelmingly Small Telescope) Observatory at the University of Potsdam in Golm, on the outskirts of Potsdam, Germany.

Our main telescope is a PlaneWave CDK20 Astrograph. We focus on educating students in astronomy and supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate projects. We occasionally capture and share astronomical images, and we are excited to post some of them here.

We are also passionate about science outreach and regularly participate in public events such as the Potsdam Day of Science and the Long Night of Astronomy.

Follow us for updates in both English and German!
