Hydrothermal eruption in Yellowstone National Park sends sightseers fleeing

A surprise #hydrothermal #explosion in #Yellowstone national park has sent sightseers running for safety,
after steam and dark-coloured rock and dirt shot up high into the sky.

The eruption happened around 10am local time on Tuesday
in #Biscuit #Basin, a collection of hot springs a couple miles north of the famous Old Faithful Geyser.

#Hydrothermal eruption sends tourists running in #Yellowstone

Part of #BiscuitBasin, just north of #OldFaithful, is closed after a hydrothermal explosion Tues morning.

Hydrothermal explosions occur when hot water creates bubbles of steam, leading to underground pressure that eventually bursts through the surface. …It’s not unlike the steam that builds up inside a sealed pressure cooker.

Mixing hydrogen, bicarbonate, and iron-rich magnetite under conditions mimicking #hydrothermal vent results in the formation of a spectrum of #organic molecules.

This is how some key molecules needed to produce life are made from inorganic chemicals, which is essential to understanding a key step in how #life formed on the Earth billions of years ago providung a plausible genesis for the organic molecules that formed ancient cell membranes.

Astrobiology · The Potential Origins Of Life In Ancient Hot Springs - AstrobiologyNewcastle University research turns to ancient hot springs to explore the origins of life on Earth.

Deep-sea #hydrothermal vents are hot springs on the #ocean floor.

Around these vents, far from any sunlight, vibrant biological communities are found.

Here, #microbes play the role of primary producers through #chemosynthesis—similar to the role that plants play on land through photosynthesis.

Now, a newly discovered bacterial species from a hydrothermal vent throws light on microbial #evolution.

Ocean #moons of the outer solar system hint at ice volcanoes, #hydrothermal vents, and the tantalizing chance of #habitability.

#Jupiter’s moons #Europa and #Ganymede, #Saturn’s moons #Enceladus and #Titan, and more objects in the outer solar system have turned out to be remarkably active ocean worlds.

They are filled with ice and vast seas of water. They may have hydrothermal vents feeding into oceans. All of these characteristics add up to potential #habitability.
