Religion continues to play a significant role in shaping societies and public opinion, even among those who don’t follow a particular faith.

I captured this photo of a religious woman in Kyiv during the declaration of independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

A few days later, a major Russian news outlet used the same image to claim that the Ukrainian church had ceased to exist.

It’s a small example of how symbols and narratives are often caught in the middle of larger political and cultural disputes.

On November 25, 2018, I was in Spain when I saw the news that Russian forces had seized three Ukrainian naval vessels in the Kerch Strait, near the Sea of Azov. I immediately began arranging logistics and traveled to the region. After obtaining the necessary accreditations from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides, I made my way to the frontlines of the conflict in the Donbas region, where Ukrainian forces were engaged in a tense standoff with Russian-backed separatists.

I embedded with Ukrainian soldiers and spent time living in a frontline bunker, documenting their daily routines and the low-intensity warfare that, even then, signaled the beginning of what would later become the full-scale invasion in 2022.

This week's #ThursdayFiveList theme is giving me text adventure vibes. It's #360Degrees : songs that have compass points or directions in them.

After three tracks that came to me all had a certain point in common, I followed through with the rest and have a concept list on my hands.

Please enjoy the expansive variety that is the oeuvre of electronic music giants Ulver, with a particular (but not exclusive) emphasis on their drone electronica era (they're currently making anti-imperialist alt disco, which is also great, incidentally).
