Terence Tao<p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> like <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/ChatGPT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ChatGPT</span></a> can do a halfway decent job of <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/SemanticSearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SemanticSearch</span></a> sometimes in <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mathematics</span></a>. I was hoping in this prompt that the AI would be able to recognize Kummer's theorem from the description, but it provided a related result (Legendre's formula) from which Kummer's theorem could then be easily located by traditional search engines. (More generally, I can see a role of AI in mathematics in providing an initial approximation to an answer, which one can then refine by more traditional methods.)</p>
