MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 18, 1918: U.S. authorities arrested Mexican anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón under the Espionage Act. They charged him with hindering the American war effort and imprisoned him at Leavenworth, where he died under highly suspicious circumstances. The authorities claimed he died of a "heart attack," but Chicano inmates rioted after his death and killed the prison guard who they believed executed him. Magon published the periodical “Regeneracion” with his brother Jesus, and with Licenciado Antonio Horcasitas. The Magonostas later led a revolution in Baja California during the Mexican Revolution. Many American members of the IWW participated. During the uprising, they conquered and held Tijuana for several days. Lowell Blaisdell writes about it in his now hard to find book, “The Desert Revolution,” (1962). Dos Passos references in his “USA Trilogy.”</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/literary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>literary</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/historicalfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>historicalfiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RicardoFloresMagon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RicardoFloresMagon</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/magon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>magon</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/magonistas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>magonistas</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mexican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/chicano" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>chicano</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Riot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Riot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
Paxton Orglot<p>102 years ago today, Mexican anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón died in a prison cell in Leavenworth, Kansas, killed by the state. His unflinching commitment to the struggle against the three-headed hydra--capital, authority, and clergy--should be an example for all of us. </p><p>"…what we pursue as anarchists are not reforms, but the death of the capitalist system, that is, the death of the right of private property, the death of the principle of authority, and the abolition of all religion."</p><p>- Ricardo Flores Magón</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RicardoFloresMag%C3%B3n" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RicardoFloresMagón</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TierraYLibertad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TierraYLibertad</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Oaxaca" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Oaxaca</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History November 20, 1922: Ricardo Flores Magón died in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. Ricardo, with his brother Enrique, founded and edited the anarchist paper Regeneracion, founded the Partido Liberal de Mexico, and organized with the IWW. Magon was one of the major intellectual forces inspiring the Mexican Revolution, and he launched a short-lived revolution in Baja California, in which many IWW members from participated. In 1918, the U.S. arrested him under the 1917 Anti-Espionage Act, for publishing an anti-war manifesto. This was part of the First Red Scare, also known as the Palmer Raids, which also swept up Eugene Debs and Emma Goldman. Ricardo Flores Magon died 4 years later, in Leavenworth Prison. </p><p>The image of Ricardo Flores Magon includes his quote: La Rebeldia es la vida. La sumision es la Muerte. Rebellion is life. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 17, 1911: Federal troops, led by Madero, recaptured Tijuana from the Magonista anarchist rebels. Among those surviving and escaping was the famous Wobbly (IWW) songwriter, Joe Hill. Another Wobbly bard, Haywire Mac (compose of The Big Rock Candy Mountain and Hallelujah, I’m a Bum), also participated in the occupation of Tijuana. The Magonistas had captured the Baja California border town of Mexicali on January 29, and Tijuana on May 8, as well as Ensenada, San Tomas, and many other northern Baja California towns. The rebels encouraged the people to take collective possession of the lands. They also supported the creation of cooperatives and opposed the establishment of any new government. Many U.S. members of the IWW participated in the revolution. Lowell Blaisdell writes about it in his now hard to find book, “The Desert Revolution,” (1962). The IWW had been active in nearby San Diego since 1906, sight of an infamous Free Speech fight in 1912. During that struggle, in which many veterans of the Desert Revolution fought, police killed 2 workers. Vigilantes kidnapped Emma Goldman and her companion Ben Reitman, who had come to show their support. However, before deporting them, they tarred and feathered Reitman and raped him with a cane. </p><p>Read my history of the IWW in San Diego here: <a href="https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2022/02/01/today-in-labor-history-february-1/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">michaeldunnauthor.com/2022/02/</span><span class="invisible">01/today-in-labor-history-february-1/</span></a></p><p>Read my biography of Haywire Mac here: <a href="https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2021/03/16/the-haywire-mac-story/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">michaeldunnauthor.com/2021/03/</span><span class="invisible">16/the-haywire-mac-story/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IWW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IWW</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RicardoFloresMagon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RicardoFloresMagon</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/magonista" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>magonista</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/folkmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>folkmusic</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/joehill" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>joehill</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/haywiremac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>haywiremac</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/emmagoldman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>emmagoldman</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/vigilantes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vigilantes</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/tijuana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tijuana</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sandiego" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sandiego</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/freespeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freespeech</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nonfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nonfiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 1, 1906: The bloody Cananea copper miners' strike began in Sonora, Mexico. The miners were demanding 5 pesos a day and an 8-hour workday, commensurate with what the U.S. citizens who were working side-by-side with them were earning. As many as 100 miners were killed in the strike, mostly by U.S. citizens working for the company. Although they were forced back to work without winning any of their demands, it contributed to the general unrest that led ultimately to the Mexican Revolution.</p><p>The anarchist, Ricardo Flores Magón, along with members of his Partido Liberal Mexicana, organized a brigade of revolutionaries, who traveled from Arizona to the Cananea copper mines with the goal of exterminating all Americans employed there. The Arizona Rangers captured several of them. Magón and many others were extradited to Tombstone, Arizona, charged with violating U.S. neutrality laws, and imprisoned until 1910. After this, the Magonistas conquered parts of Baja California, including Tijuana, during the Mexican Revolution. Many IWW members from the U.S. joined the Magonista forces.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cananea" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cananea</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/copper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>copper</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mining</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RicardoFloresMagon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RicardoFloresMagon</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/strike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>strike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/massacre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>massacre</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IWW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IWW</span></a></p>
