Ich weiß, es wirkt erst mal etwas befremdlich, aber die Zeiten sind im Wandel. Das wird wohl niemand leugnen. Alle Sachen sind frei erhältlich und ich bin auch ein großer Verfechter davon, dass das so ist (kann man hier nachlesen). Aber es muss auch weiter unabhängige, unangepasste, nicht marktgerechte Musik und Kunst geben. Wir und andere versuchen, einen Weg zu finden, wie wir es immer tun. Ich denke, alles frei zugänglich zu machen, ist ein richtiger Weg. Und wenn einen was interessiert, man was als wichtig empfindet oder einfach will, dass es nie endet, sollte man es ein klein wenig unterstützen. Ich war wohl ein bisschen ungeduldig, sorry. Es freut mich sehr, wenn die Songs so aufgenommen werden. Es ist wirklich kein leicht zugängliches Album, auch wenn es auf den ersten Blick vielleicht „poppiger“ wirkt als das, was man von uns gewohnt ist. Die „Radikalität“ steckt im Detail. Herr Kutzer bringt es auf den Punkt. Ich hätte es selbst nicht besser sagen können! ------ Musik vom Platz zur linken Gottes: REVEREND ELVIS AND THE UNDEAD SYNCOPATORS verursachen „Moral Panic“ Mögt Ihr abgefuckte Musik für abgefuckte Leute? Nein, ganz sicher beschreibt das nicht alle Songs auf „Moral Panic“ (Suzy Q Records), dem neuen Album von REVEREND ELVIS AND THE UNDEAD SYNCOPATORS. Ebenso so sicher ist es aber die Perfekte Umschreibung von „You Fucked Me Up“. Der Songtitel ist unsensibel? Wartet, bis Ihr die Musik hört. Die Gitarre ist verstimmt und lärmt, in den Lyrics wird garantiert keine euphemistische Abkürzung wie „F-Wort“ verwendet. Fuck! Die andere Seite des Reverend ist eine melancholische Feinfühligkeit. „The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn“ von ALISON KRAUSS oder die unprätentiöse Version von LASZLO JAVORS „Gloomy Sunday“, einem Lied aus den 1930er Jahren, das angeblich so düster war, dass es Menschen in den Selbstmord trieb, sind zwei leuchtende Beispiele dafür. Es geht nicht um kalkulierte und kitschige Melancholie. Sie kommt in reduziertem Gewand daher. Pur. So pur und direkt, wie REVEREND ELVIS in jedem Moment dieser Platte (wie auch auf anderen Aufnahmen) klingt. Die radikale Haltung dieser Musik ist Punk. Das musikalische Fundament sind Bluegrass, Blues, Country… Künstler, die hier und da angeeckt sind. Wer könnte auf der „Left Hand Side Of God“ sitzen? Gabriel? Niemand? Oder der, der eben auch mit dem linken Pfad verbunden ist? REVEREND ELVIS interpretiert die Nummer von JIMMY DRIFTWOOD (1907-1998) mit Banjo und Kontrabass-Begleitung jedenfalls auf eine Weise, die betont, dass es völlig Ok ist, sich an einem anderen Ort zu befinden, als die (vermeintlich) Auserwählten. Ich schätze, er würde sagen: Ich bin ein Sünder. Weil ich ein Mensch bin. Na und? Kein Grund für „Moral Panic“. Keine Panik! Nicht einmal dann, wenn Ihr den Titel „Cry Me A River“ lest. Nein, das ist kein JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE-Cover. Es ist der gute alte ARTHUR HAMILTON- Song, der zum Jazzstandard wurde und (unter anderem) von ELLA FITZGERALD interpretiert wurde. Mit ein paar Hand-Claps und minimalem Hintergrundgesang von den UNDEAD SYNCOPATORS unterstützt, serviert uns REVEREND ELVIS eine fantastisch swingende Version. Ja, ein gebrochenes Herz ist ätzend. Aber hält es einen zwingend davon ab, zu feiern und Spaß zu haben? Seltsamerweise tut es das nicht. Und ist es nicht auf eine Art rebellisch, sich nicht von Liebeskummer überwältigen zu lassen? Rebellion ist der Schlüssel. Ob „Mama Tried“, geschrieben von MERLE HAGGARD (1937-2016), oder „I Am A Good Ol’ Rebel“ mit selbst geschriebenen Texten des Reverend… Freiheit und Unangepasstheit sind die Essenz dieser Musik. Wie auch immer man sie nennt. Death Country könnte als Orientierungshilfe dienen. Das ist aber nicht alles. Handgemachte Musik für Querköpfe, die Gefühle nicht verleugnet, um ein Image aufrechtzuerhalten. Ich hoffe, das trifft den Nagel mehr oder weniger auf den Kopf. Oft heißt das, dass Songs ganz aufs Wesentliche reduziert werden. Nehmen wir die Schlussnummer „Unchained Melody“. Ursprünglich 1955 geschrieben und von Künstlern von Elvis über Bing Crosby oder Roy Orbison bis hin zu Cindy Lauper gecovert, ist das ein extrem beliebtes und geschmeidiges Lied. Auf „Moral Panic“ klingt es immer noch eingängig, aber auch ein bisschen kratzig. Die Gitarre ist nicht krachig, aber trotzdem roh. Keine Effekte. Keine Extras. Nur die Melodie. Die Stimme. Das Instrument. Vielleicht sind am Ende all die polierten Plastikprodukte viel abgefuckter als das hier. Dieses Album ist wunderschön. I was probably a bit impatient, sorry. I’m very happy when the songs are received that way. It’s really not an easily accessible album, even if at first glance it may seem more “poppy” than what people are used to from us. The “radicality” is in the details. Mr. Kutzer gets to the heart of it. I couldn’t have said it better myself! -----enjoy------ Music from the left hand side of god: REVEREND ELVIS AND THE UNDEAD SYNCOPATORS cause „Moral Panic“ Do you like fucked up music for fucked up people? I don’t think this labels all songs on „Moral Panic“ (Suzy Q Records) the new album by REVEREND ELVIS AND THE UNDEAD SYNCOPATORS. It surely labels „You Fucked Me Up“. The title is rude? Wait until you heard the music. The guitar is out of tune and noone will use any euphemistic abreviations like „F-word“ here. Fuck! The other side of the Reverend is a melancholic sensibility. „The Boy Who Wouldn’t Hoe Corn“ by ALISON KRAUSS or the unpretentious version of LASZLO JAVORS „Gloomy Sunday“, a tune from the 1930s that was said to be so dark that it could make people commit suizide, are two shining examples. It is no fashionable melancholy. It is stripped down and pure. As pure and direct as REVEREND ELVIS sounds in every moment of this record (as on other recordings). The radical attitude of this music is punk. The musical fundament is bluegrass, blues, country… artists that went against the grain here and there. Who might sit on the „Left Hand Side Of God“? Gabriel? Noone? Or he, who is linked to the left side path? REVEREND ELVIS interprets the JIMMY DRIFTWOOD (1907-1998) number with a banjo and upright bass in a way that stresses the fact that the place that is devided from the chosen few is allright. I guess the REVEREND would say: I am a sinner. Because I am human. So what? No need for „Moral Panic“. Don’t panic! Not even when you read the title „Cry Me A River“.No it is not a JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE cover. It is the good old ARTHUR HAMILTON-song, that became a Jazz standard and was (among others) interpreted by ELLA FITZGERALD. Supported by the UNDEAD SYNCOPATORS with some handclaps and minimal backing vocals, REVEREND ELVIS serves us a fantastic swinging version. Yes, a broken heart sucks. But does it keep you from partying and having a good time? In a strange way, it does not. And isn’t it rebellion to refuse to let lovesickness take over? Rebellion is the key. Whether it’s „Mama Tried“, written by MERLE HAGGARD (1937-2016) or „I Am A Good Ol’ Rebel“ with self penned lyrics by the Reverend… Freedom and being unadapted is the essence of this music. Whatever you call it. Death Country might help as an orientation, but is more than that. Hand made Rebel music, that does not deny feelings just to keep up an image. I hope that hits the nail more or less. In many cases this means stripping songs down to the essence.
