Ivor<p>Yesterday on the Pennine Way, myself, another volunteer and Adam from North Pennines National Landscape repaired a stile, cleared a blocked culvert, rearranged a stone drain across the path and cut out some fabric from the path that was a trip hazard.</p><p>This is opposite the quarry above High Force. Didn't need 3 people but we were all needed to carry tools and materials as only way to this point is on foot from High Force Hotel. Hot and tiring.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Volunteer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Volunteer</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PennineWay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PennineWay</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>Yesterday at Shildon Engine House, a drone was used to capture dozens of images to be used to make a photogrammetry image of the site.</p><p>I also took some photos of damage and assessed the condition of the site. Worst thing for me was previous infill 'repair' using brick. Why? It's not like there isn't any stone lying about.</p><p>Built by Cornish miners and housed a Cornish beam engine that moved up and down in the tall opening to drain a lead mine.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Volunteer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Volunteer</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>North Pennines National Landscape today ran a guided walk back from a stop at Kirkhaugh on the South Tynedale railway.</p><p>What a lovely way to travel, we were taken 3 miles out of Alston by steam train and then crossed the railway and the river Tyne to walk back to town.</p><p>A fairly uneventful walk, very easy terrain but good company and tea and cake in the station cafe after. Highlight was Kirkhaugh church (it's a Kirk on a Haugh) which has the thinnest steeple in England!<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Cumbria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cumbria</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>Later, had a visit from a North Pennines National Landscape bloke who put up a new sign for a new walking route, the 'Roof of England Walk'.</p><p>Had a longish chat as I told him I volunteered with his lot as well. This new walk must run up the hill behind my house to Cow Green. Where it comes from I know not as it was one of the few things we didn't talk about. It will be on their website, if you want to find out more. <br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Walking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Walking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>Went to a talk about perennial veg growing in Penrith. Presented by someone from Acorn Bank, also in Eden Valley. Very interesting and there were other discussions about ponds and wildflower planting for wildlife.</p><p>On way back the weather was unusually clear, so stopped at Hartside to take in the magnificent view, of which this photo does little justice.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Cumbria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cumbria</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Tourist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tourist</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>I'm at Nenthead Mines to do some work underground. It's still too cold to do anything above ground. It's minus 1 or 2 and the wind chill is too much to bear.</p><p>This old map in the canteen shows the extent of the veins. They are everywhere. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mining</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>Here at 430m asl we are just below the snow line. Another snow shower has just passed and as I'm posting this we're now enveloped in cloud. </p><p>The other side of Harwood rises higher, Bowes Close on the B6277 opposite is just over 450m. The hills behind the house, Cow Rake Rigg and Widdybank Fell, rise to flattish tops of between 500m and 530m.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/SemiAlpine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SemiAlpine</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>I'm at Nenthead Mines, doing some repair to the river walls. In the centre of the photo you can see an area near Smallcleugh where the wall has fallen in to the river.</p><p>I might make a bit of a thread as I've got other, closer photos.</p><p>A big disappointment today was finding broken windows in a mine shop. Now, two volunteers are having to repair the windows instead of doing other vital work. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Volunteer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Volunteer</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mining</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>Went back to Middlehope Shield to finish work on the path that was started yesterday. Spread some aggregate on other areas of the path behind me as well.</p><p>There is further work to do, replacing stones that have fallen out further down the track toward Westgate.</p><p>Path had it's first traffic as two dog walkers came up from Westgate. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Volunteer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Volunteer</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>I'm back at The Binks to fix another gap in a wall. Still dressed for the weather, it's about 6°C up here, should warm up. Clouds are hiding the Alston road but should lift. Several Snipe are both 'drumming' and calling an alarm (chip-er chip-er chip-er) at me. </p><p>I'm about 100ft above my house, so maybe about 1500ft above sea level which makes this the highest piece of work I've ever done. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>On a grey dreich day in Upper Teesdale, this is what I've found in the dry stone wall today.</p><p>Left to right : a piece of metal ore (lead I think, it's as dense as Jeremy Hunt); a broken piece of china; a broken bottle; a large brachiopod, about 100mm across.</p><p>If any body can identify the brachiopod, tia. Or if its something else, I won't be offended to be corrected. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/AlstonBlock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AlstonBlock</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/geology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geology</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>It's a glorious morning in Upper Teesdale. Snow is still lying at Yad Moss, the skiers will have had some sport this weekend. I'm at the Binks, an abandoned farmhouse, the land around it is let to the next farm along. </p><p>The sun is slowly thawing out the stones in the wall where the mud from last week had frozen around them.</p><p>I've disturbed a snipe, there's Lapwing, curlew, a kestrel and black grouse around. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a></p>
