Years ago there was a website called "Calming Manatee" that showed a random picture of a #manatee every time it loaded with a soothing message on it.

I loved that website. I miss that website. So today I made my own. It's pretty rough (CSS best practices are always changing!), and it doesn't (yet?) have the soothing phrases, but for me, the manatee itself was the main purveyor of #calm. So enjoy. Bug reports and feature requests welcome.

I took this picture of a manatee ten years ago (geeeeez) at Crystal River. It was for a film about Wildlife and Humans interactions. Three Sisters Spring was still open and the US Wildlife and Fish Service had issued me a permit authorizing me to go down to the bottom in apnea. I guess it's forbidden now and I think Three Sisters is close now to protect the manatees ( who are in danger and adorable by the way).

All three species of #manatee are listed by the World Conservation Union as vulnerable to #extinction.

The main causes of death for manatees are human-related issues, such as habitat destruction, human objects and violent collisions with propeller-driven boats and ships. Some manatees have been found with over 50 scars on them from propeller blades.

Since today, Wednesday, March 29, is Manatee Appreciation Day, I thought I’d post this photograph of a Mother Manatee and her calf statue that can be seen along the waterfront in downtown Bradenton, Florida. The manatee, aka sea cow, is a revered marine animal in this neck of the woods.
