A few weeks ago, I noticed the Litter Robot my two cats use started going through a lot more litter than usual. I couldn't determine which of the cats was the culprit but they were both due for check-ups and vaccination boosters anyway so I hauled them both in to the vet last week.
Turns out, my super sweet cat, Oliver, had a UTI. Not great but, hey, problem solved... right? NOPE. Also turns out, my outgoing cat, Picasso, has diabetes.
The tests for both cats (blood, fecal, and urine), vaccinations for both cats, 10 days of UTI medication for Oliver, 42 days worth of insulin for Picasso, and an all-in-one package of 60 needles and a sharps container for Picasso came to $1077.85.
Oliver's treatment will be wrapped up in a couple of days. Picasso's medication and syringes will be an ongoing expense of ~$100 per month until his diabetes goes into remission (which is something that apparently can happen with cats but won't necessarily). The vet also advised us to switch Picasso to wet food because basically any wet cat food is lower carb than dry cat food. I can't segregate my cats for feeding, though, so now both are getting wet food exclusively which is gonna run us ~$90 per month.
I'm really fortunate that I am in a good enough financial position that I can manage these costs without too much stress. I do, however, worry about the additional low-dopamine tasks that have been added to my plate. I can just barely take care of myself many days and now, twice a day, I have to prepare food, prepare meds, inject a cat, and clean food dishes. There will also be less frequent tasks like managing recurring prescriptions, getting time off for more vet appointments, setting and going to those appointments, etc.
It's a lot but, one week into this new chapter of pet care, I am managing well so far. For his sake and mine, I am very strenuously hoping that Picasso's diabetes will go into remission soon but I have no sense of how likely that is. The first follow-up appointment is next week. Wish us luck!
