The data flow for the new project so far is as follows:

Maintain the data collection in Strapi - all news clippings, people, org info etc are kept in the CMS

@astro pulls Strapi data as a collection and builds static JSON files as ReST routes

#Svelte + #d3js pull the data from the ReST endpoints and draw the visualization in the browser.

The actual site is fully static, but I get the benefit of a full db and a nice interface for the backend, that is hosted independently.

Slightly at sea on where to start.

- My current JS skill level is _extreme novice_.
- I don't have access to ArcGIS.
- Comfortable with #QGIS [*] and the #python #geospatial ecosystem (#geopandas #xarray #rasterio and plotting with #matplotlib)

I’m trying to digitally recreate a vintage style world map with two hemispheres (Old World and New World) and two polar regions and where the world is as it is known by Europeans in 1700. (So Abel Tasman had already seen the western coast of New Zealand and the southern tip of Tasmania.)

Next, I’ll add labels, but anachronistically using current names. (Nope, never “Gulf of America”.)

During my holidays break I experimented with a #Bluesky topic trend visualization with #D3js using a #VertexAI embedding model, DBSCAN clustering to gather common topics, #Gemini to summarize clusters of posts.

All implemented in #java using #langchain4j

#30DayMapChallenge Day : Only circular shapes

After considering other options, I went with depicting the circular streets of #MetroManila, #Philippines , often called “circles” or “rotondas”. Each street’s center is placed on its exact location, but its radius and street width are scaled ~40×.

The streets and radii are from #OpenStreetMap while the street widths are measured using Esri’s World Imagery. The final image was rendered using #D3js and uses a Transverse Mercator projection.

One thing LLMs are extremely good at is helping create complex #d3js graphs.

I mean, I wouldn’t ever trust them with actual data analysis, but autocompleting deranged JavaScript is certainly in their wheelhouse and this legit makes using D3 way easier.

Allowing full 360° rotation would have made this “3D" #SVG scatter chart massively confusing, so I've added a constrained range to the rotation. Adds just enough parallax to make it clear where each point sits within the cube.
