Jay Baker<p>I'm pleased to announce that the working title of the radical media network I've been working on helping to create is The Intersection! It is inspired by the French <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/ReseauMutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReseauMutu</span></a> but can be based on a framework similar to that of <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Beehaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Beehaw</span></a>. There's an in-depth explanation on how this was arrived at, on my site, here: <a href="https://www.mediaactivist.com/manifesto/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">mediaactivist.com/manifesto/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> If you're interested in getting involved, let me know -- and in the spirit of intersectionality, if you'd like to contribute your own photo of your hand raising a phone, these could be used in similar posters, hopefully reflecting a diverse range of people! Thanks and solidarity!</p>
Jay Baker<p>It's probably time for another <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a>! I've been on <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> for many years, but switched to this server last year and love Todon and everything they do. I'm keen to utilise the <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> to develop a radical media network inspired by the French <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/ReseauMutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReseauMutu</span></a> model and have had useful conversations with the activists behind that. Recently I've been helping to launch <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Sheffield" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sheffield</span></a> Mask Bloc. What my bio on here doesn't cover, my website surely will if you want to know more: <a href="https://www.mediaactivist.com/bio/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">mediaactivist.com/bio/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Jay Baker<p>I'm still rebuilding my website but one thing I just realised I ought to mention more is this little* media activist manifesto, between two and twenty years in the making, depending on how you think of it -- *big, so TL;DR: we can learn from the failures of state, corporate, cooperative, and Indy media, still embrace "citizen journalism" and have our very own media networks to connect and communicate within our communities for radical change, taking inspiration from <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/ReseauMutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReseauMutu</span></a> and also the <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> itself to build our own one-stop site for resources, news, events, and mutual aid in each of our localities, block by block, site by site: <a href="https://www.mediaactivist.com/manifesto/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">mediaactivist.com/manifesto/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/media" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>media</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/MediaStudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MediaStudies</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Indymedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Indymedia</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/RadicalMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RadicalMedia</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/CitizenJournalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CitizenJournalism</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/GuerrillaJournalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GuerrillaJournalism</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Beehaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Beehaw</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Lemmy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lemmy</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Kbin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kbin</span></a></p>
Jay Baker<p>If it seems like I'm currently talking a lot about "the Media Activist Manifesto," it's because I worked on it all year, and researched the subject for twenty years. I've arrived at the conclusion that, in the spirit of <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/ReseauMutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReseauMutu</span></a>, or Mutu Network, the <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> can hold a key to societal change through radical news, based on a framework similar to <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Lemmy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lemmy</span></a>, <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Kbin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kbin</span></a>, and in particular <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Beehaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Beehaw</span></a>. Imagine an online space to visit for anticapitalist and antifascist information and info relevant to whichever locality you're in. Those interested in helping develop this, please let me know! <a href="https://www.mediaactivist.com/manifesto/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">mediaactivist.com/manifesto/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Jay Baker<p>TLDR: We're indeed in the "Roaring Twenties" and history tells us that brings a very real threat emerging on the horizon. But there are ways we can work together, collectively, to raise awareness of the actual problems, and the little-known tangible solutions. Information as mutual aid. How about we create something similar to the French <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/ReseauMutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReseauMutu</span></a> but by using the <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a>, maybe something based on <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Beehaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Beehaw</span></a>'s format? Sections for each city, sharing ideas and information. If you're interested, let me know!</p>
Jay Baker<p>It's up! My piece for Freedom News -- on information as mutual aid, with potential for a network of interconnected sites across the UK based on the French-language Mutu model:<br><a href="https://freedomnews.org.uk/2023/10/15/mutu-network-challenges-media-moguls/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=mutu-network-challenges-media-moguls" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">freedomnews.org.uk/2023/10/15/</span><span class="invisible">mutu-network-challenges-media-moguls/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=mutu-network-challenges-media-moguls</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/IndyMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IndyMedia</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/LibertarianSocialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LibertarianSocialism</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/socialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>socialism</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/ReseauMutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReseauMutu</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/MutuNetwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MutuNetwork</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Mutu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mutu</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/MutualAid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MutualAid</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/media" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>media</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/MediaStudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MediaStudies</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/MediaActivism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MediaActivism</span></a></p>
