Mike Barker<p>A new preprint from the lab testing aspects of a hypothesis that lower chromosome numbers may result from selection to reduce independently assorting incompatibilities. In short, we do not find evidence to support the hypothesis in our analyses. Great work led by PhD student Geoff Finch! </p><p>Post-zygotic reproductive isolation is not correlated with chromosome number in plants</p><p><a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.01.05.573914v1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20</span><span class="invisible">24.01.05.573914v1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/chromosome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>chromosome</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/WGD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WGD</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/plantevolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plantevolution</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/speciation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>speciation</span></a></p>
The Global Plant Council<p>Dynamic plants: Origin &amp; geographic evolution of cycads clarified </p><p>Paleobotanist have made an important breakthrough in understanding the origin and geographic distribution of cycads. By combining genetic data with leaf morphological data from both fossil and living species for the first time, the researchers created a phylogenetic tree of these fascinating and endangered plants. </p><p><a href="https://globalplantcouncil.org/dynamic-plants-origin-and-geographic-evolution-of-cycads-clarified/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">globalplantcouncil.org/dynamic</span><span class="invisible">-plants-origin-and-geographic-evolution-of-cycads-clarified/</span></a> via University of Vienna <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/PlantScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PlantScience</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>science</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/cycads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cycads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/plants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plants</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/PlantEvolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PlantEvolution</span></a></p>
Ingolf Kühn<p>Dear colleagues studying <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PlantEvolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PlantEvolution</span></a> and <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/photosynthesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photosynthesis</span></a> <br>I try to find out how long the transition from C3 to C4 plants took (range or average of years or generations). I found out how frequently it happened (&gt;60 times), when (30Ma to 7Ma ago) and why. But failed to find any information how long it takes to do the full transition to divergence into a clade. Or is this impossible?</p><p>Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot for boosting!</p>
