Space Telescope Science Inst.<p>The colors seen in planetary nebulas are caused by different elements, such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. They are part of the gas that makes up the nebula. Nebulas are all created by dying stars that are sloughing off layers of gas and dust.
