I see that the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association have just updated their retirement living standards calculations.

If, like me, you're in the final few years of your working life and thinking about when you can afford to retire, you may find them very useful.

One note of caution: the income figures they give are for net income, not pre-tax income. You have to read the small print to figure that out.

But still, very useful.

Let’s learn the difference between the State Pension and Workplace Pension in the UK 🇬🇧

👉 State Pension
A regular payment from the government once you reach State Pension age, based on your National Insurance record.

👉 Workplace Pension
A pension scheme set up by your employer. Both you and your employer contribute, and you get tax relief too.

💡 Combine both for a more comfortable retirement! 😊

Day 29 👴🏻🧓

#PeterDutton has again refused to say exactly how the #Coalition would make its promised cuts to #migration, declining to say which #SkilledWorker groups would be reduced or whether his target is even achievable given previous carveouts for working holidaymakers and families.

The opposition leader did say cuts to #foreign worker numbers could be dealt with in part by allowing #pensioners to work more hours without reducing their #pensions.”

Retire, then work ‘em till they drop.

'Exclusive: the state pension is being siphoned off abroad
And HMRC has no idea where it’s going to.'

newstatesman.com/politics/econ

'the National Pension Helpline has put together a handy guide for Irish citizens who want to cheaply purchase a retirement funded by the British taxpayer. Australian media advertises the fact that a state pension worth “thousands of dollars” can be bought cheaply by Australians who live in Australia'

An editorial in tomorrow's FT on 'How cut Britain's rising welfare bill' contains the following statement:

'The government should reform the UK’s generous “triple lock” on state pensions'.

'generous'? as the chart below shows the UK state pension is well below the OECD & EU27 averages... and because some are able to top it up through private pensions, actually this embeds further inequality in old age.

The triple lock was intended to reduce this inequality.... its not 'generous'!

"The Resistance doesn’t seem to run through the Democratic Party right now."

The #DemocraticParty is asleep

The leadership of the #DNC has checked out

The senile old white men of the Democratic party have opened their Golden Parachutes and are softly descending downward to the Golden Years of their retirements

Nothing will touch their world-class #HealthCare, their lifetime #Pensions, their #NetWorth

They've got everything they need

They've checked out, leaving the United States holding the bag

Perhaps unsurprisingly, as the Local Government Pension Scheme (for England & Wales) has moved from a deficit of £6bn in 2019 to a current surplus of £85bn, many Local Councils are planning on taking a contributions holiday (or at least reducing the level of contribution) in their current period of budgetary crisis.

This has clear precedent in the private sector, and while tempting may be storing up trouble for the future (as the decline in Defined Benefit schemes indicates).

Biden really needs to sign this. It's a crock of shit that teachers, fire fighters, and other public workers can't receive their full Social Security benefits, or even worse spousal benefits. People don't stick to a government job for life, so it makes sense that they should be able to see the full benefits from their private sector work.

Biden, sign it!
