To make it, they took all of the Level 2 cache off a Pentium II, clocked it at 266 or 300 MHz, and sold it at an AMD-like price. But due to the lack of L2 cache, it was slower than a previous-generation Pentium running at 233 MHz, let alone an AMD or Cyrix chip running at 266 or 300 MHz.
>
> But the L2 cache was the Pentium II’s limiting factor in overclocking. So a 266 MHz Celeron ran happily at 400 MHz, or potentially even 450 MHz, the same speed as the fastest Pentium II at the time. It was slower than a Pentium II at the same speed, but it worked well for 3D gaming.
>
> But the only people who bought those Celerons were overclockers and people who didn’t know anything about computers.
#Overclocking time! One of my favourite 286es is getting a makeover!

This one has a weird chipset branded "Solutions", but it turns out it's really a bog-standard (but very cool!) C&T NEAT chipset. The board itself seems to be of the brand Cotek, but that's just going by the stickers on the BIOS and KBC. According to #TheRetroWeb however*, the brand is PCT - but no model name is to be found anywhere. The stock configuration of this board seems to be a 25MHz CPU with a 50MHz crystal driving it. So it's already a damned fast 286 - but there's no reason it can't go even faster!

Well, long story a bit shorter: After some extremely clumsy soldering on my part, I was able to replace the main 50MHz crystal with the Any_Clk, a custom, variable clock generator from MiGron**.

Turns out this machine is stable at 31.25MHz! Now if that doesn't take this 286 well into 386 performance territory, I don't know what will!

See the beautiful close-up pictures in this post (details in the alt-texts), and look for benchmarks and a hint of drama in the follow-ups!

#retrocomputing #hardwaremods #286 #needforspeed

https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/pct-unknown ** https://migronelectronics.bigcartel.com/product/any-clk-devices-for-ibm-xt-286-386-486-overclocking-underclocking

OMG! Ubuntu!
How to Install GreenWithEnvy on Ubuntu (NVIDIA GPU Tool)

Do you use Ubuntu with an NVIDIA graphics card? If so, you may want to install GreenWithEnvy. And in this post I show you how. GreenWithEnvy is a free, open-source utility for Linux designed exclusively for use with with NVIDIA graphics cards. It displays real-time stats about GPU usage, memory share, current temperature, power consumption, whether encoder/decoders are active, and current fan speed. Plus, you can also see information about your graphics card, including model name, driver version number, and clock speed. Neatly, you’re also able to view historical data for GPU stats too.
