Szef kuchni poleca.

I had a lot of folks show me the photos they took of the moon on their phones from last night. Phones are getting better each year, but my Sony A7r V shows there still isn't a replacement yet for an SLR/DSLR, a good lens, and a little bit of knowledge. Exposure bracketing made this one of the best moon photos I have ever taken.

"Nick Dunn, a professor of urban design in the United Kingdom, has talked about the idea of 'nocturnal commons' as a way to envision our shared responsibility to maintain night skies as a public good. Whether DarkSky certification will be an effective way of resisting the privatisation of the celestial realm is debatable, given the gulf in power between corporate and community interests.”

Total lunar eclipse is happening later this week, visible from almost all of North America and parts of South America.

Partial eclipse will be visible from other parts of the world.

And the moon will turn dark red. For folks in eastern North America interested in seeing it, you'll need to stay up late.

Or wake up early.

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feature a supermassive black hole at a galaxy's center. These things come in three flavors: quasars, blazars, and Seyfert galaxies. But don't get confused! They are almost the same phenomenon viewed from different angles. However, an important difference between quasars/blazars and Seyferts seems to exist. The latter is less energetic than the former, which are also farther away from us. A good example of a Seyfert Galaxy is M 64, the Black-Eyed Galaxy.

"What the Isle of Rum lacks is artificial illumination. There are no streetlights, light-flooded sports fields, neon signs, industrial sites or anything else casting a glow against the night sky. On a cold January day, the sun sets early and rises late, yielding to a blackness that envelopes the island, a blackness so deep that the light of stars manifests suddenly at dusk and the glow of the moon is bright enough to navigate by. For this reason, Rum was recently named Europe’s newest dark-sky sanctuary."
