The *old* widow is a result of modern medicine. I've seen statistics showing that a Swedish #marriage in the 1800s lasted on average six years. Then someone died. The bereaved usually re-married quickly to form a new functional family unit (because of gendered labour division), so almost everybody had stepchildren.

It's our wedding anniversary today - we do celebrate it a bit just not as much as our first proper date anniversary. We knew each other as part of a large group of mutual friends (several groups overlapping). And we've been in a committed relationship since we were 22 but didn't choose to get married until we were 28. But our wedding anniversary is a nice one to celebrate nonetheless. He made croissants for breakfast this morning and is currently making a roast for dinner. I had things on so we'll do the special picnic lunch by the water tomorrow.
