Im Ruhrgebiet sind sie seit 2020 immaterielles Kulturerbe: Kioske. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts fanden sich die ersten Kioske in deutschen Städten. Sie dienten zunächst als Versorgungsstationen mit Trinkwasser, daher auch die Bezeichnung #Trinkhalle. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg hielt der Alkohol Einzug in die Büdchen – was die frühere soziale Aufgabe der Kioske ad absurdum führte.
