Today I learnt that there are two instruments called #HiRISE in operation in #space related domains:

• The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment onboard #NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (#MRO): uahirise.org/epo/about/, and
• The High-Resolution Imaging and Spectroscopy of Exoplanets instrument at #ESO's #VLT facility in #Chile: cnrs.fr/en/press/first-light-h

Image of the HiRISE fibre injection module, of the latter, which I didn't know existed.

#PPOD: Absolutely amazing #HiRISE image of #Mars. Polygons form in nature for many different reasons. In this case, it's due to intersecting dune ridges! If this deposit were to become indurated and eroded, we might not be able, from orbit, to tell that they originated as wind-blown dunes and interpret the polygons as evidence for a dried-up lake, for example. From this NASA article by Eleni Ravanis we learn that the hill obstructing the view to #Ingenuity is called Alsap Butte:

Next stop, Dox Castle (bottom of second map). The green line shows the planned route, the white my prediction for the actual route, with the rover continuing on the same side west of the planned, which has proven to be rather uneventful so far.

This Memorial Day added an interesting twist to the daily grind of #Perseverance 🙂 Not only did it clear the rest of the rego-ripples it had to the north, but took advantage of the holiday to go on a picnic at a nice hill to the northeast 😀 🙃. Apparently the hill has a geological story to tell and the team's geologists are eager to hear it.

The path is a wild guess.

Finally on Sol 1063 #Perseverance did the right thing and backed off 23m to an area where it (most probably) has line-of-site to #Ingenuity, so more images of the #MarsHelicopter can be captured, especially images with its SUPERCAM telescope.

The previous location where Perseverance captured images of the Ingenuity is shown with a green rover.

Another sol, another drive for #Perseverance. The rover is approaching the northern edge of the rocky Margin Unit, getting closer to where #Ingenuity is located after its eventful #Flight72, but it still has no line-of-sight to the #MarsHelicopter. It may be in a better position for a first look in a sol or two, as seen in the visibility plot below.

The path shown is a guess.
