Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁<p>It's asparagus season and I've got the spear-it in me! This week's food column is about the first vegetable of the season. Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁<p>When a chef I trust pulled me aside to tell me about someone who's fighting the odds to start a hot sauce company, I took notice. Jacob Wilkinson, who is visually impaired, turned a pandemic project into Blowing Smoke, featuring Ontario-grown produce with fantastic names like Devil’s Night and Yellow Snow. </p><p>Am so honoured he let me tell his story.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/EatLocal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EatLocal</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/WaterlooRegion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaterlooRegion</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Entrepreneur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Entrepreneur</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/VisuallyImpaired" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VisuallyImpaired</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Accessiblity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Accessiblity</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/SMB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SMB</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Mastonom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastonom</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Food</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/visually-impaired-hot-sauce-maker-jacob-wilkinson-blowing-smoke-1.7531060" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-w</span><span class="invisible">aterloo/visually-impaired-hot-sauce-maker-jacob-wilkinson-blowing-smoke-1.7531060</span></a></p>

Maho Pacheco 🦝🍻<p>You know you can tax the rich right now, right? Just shift where you spend your money.</p><p>Support your local coffee shop instead of a big chain. Shop at farmers' markets. Eat at local restaurants. Buy from mom-and-pop stores. Choose independent brands over corporate giants.</p><p>Yes, it might cost a little more, but you're redirecting money away from corporations that thrive on low wages and putting it straight into your community—where it can grow, support jobs, and build something better.</p><p>You are effectively taxing the rich.</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/ShopLocal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ShopLocal</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SupportSmallBusiness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SupportSmallBusiness</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/EatLocal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EatLocal</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/CommunityWealth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommunityWealth</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/EthicalSpending" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EthicalSpending</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/TaxTheRich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TaxTheRich</span></a></p>
Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁A bit of local love: I ran errands after the broadcast and wandered into Humble Lotus for a catch-up. I said "I'm hungry." Jared made me this: tuna, crab, torched jalapeno, avocado, cucumber, spicy-sweet sauce, sprouts. Michelle<p>I was "in the field" (doing research) with folks in the Ottawa valley who produce and source organic foods locally in 2019. People talked about connections with others, environmental issues in production and transportation, health issues, and food security/food sovereignty. I am thinking about those people now as we enter this trade war. They are ready. They have tapped into the bounty locally - and there is bounty! Check out your local farmers!</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/Ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ottawa</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/EatLocal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EatLocal</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/CommunitySupportedAgriculture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommunitySupportedAgriculture</span></a></p>

Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁<p>The other day I was in Stratford and one of our stops was The Painted Baker, where I picked up one of his Irish scones for my post-broadcast breakfast.</p><p>Frankly, it's the best scone I've bought locally in ages (if not ever). Too many are stodgy, leaden, or trying to be a (American-style) muffin in wedge form.
