In fields where I am an expert (and have the degrees or CV to prove it), I'd never insist that people trust what I say just because of that.

Take it more seriously? Listen more closely? Follow up more diligently? Of course.

But if I have nothing to back up my statements other than "I'm an expert and you're not," then honestly, I have nothing to back up my statements. You're right to be skeptical.

Continued thread

So in 2019 we were debating the motion “Entrepreneurs today do more harm than good” against the provost and one of the professors at Singapore Management University and we managed to flip an initial audience vote of 28% for / 72% against to 52% for / 48% against, thereby winning the debate.

The video of the event was locked in Facebook so, as part of my work on the new version of the Small Technology Foundation website, I just liberated it.

#Orbán’s #Fidesz party proposes #Russia-style crackdown on #Hungary’s #CivilSociety

The new bill fits into a pattern of democratic backsliding for the Central European country.

"The bill says threats to national sovereignty include influencing #PublicOpinion, promoting #democratic #debate, or challenging state-defined values like #Christian culture & traditional family roles."

Some #advice about #argument online that will make you look WAY smarter, and be a whole lot less annoying -

Instead of demanding someone's sources, find a source that proves your own point.

This does four things-

1. It educates you on the topic better, so you have fresh info to #debate them.

2. It makes you less ignorant in case you were wrong.

3. It makes it harder for them to defend something incorrect.

4. It doesn't annoy the shit out of someone who knew what they were talking about.

If anyone ever accuses you of being wrong about something obvious, and demands sources immediately, there is a very simple way to make them look dumb -

Ask them for their sources that you're wrong.

When they say they don't have any, pull the same tactic they usually use and go "OH! No sources? Guess you have no clue what you're talking about then,".

It destroys their attempt to waste your time.

If they actually do go look and you're correct, they'll learn something too

Day 31 🥔🤓🍻🚫👵📺

“People obviously are over the ads and just want #election day out of the way and get on with their lives. I get all of that. But you know, we live in the greatest #country in the world. It’s worth #fighting for and #protecting and #defending and that’s what the #debate is about”

“I think #alcohol is the first essential ingredient, I’m sure of that, responsible drinking as well, but NOT WATCHING THE ABC would be a good start.
For the young ones, #listening at home, FORGET THE ABC. And if you do that, you can probably start with a good night.” — #PeterDutton

Mission: getting into a fruitful good faith discussion about GenAI in art:
Impossible

Seriously, could who do I need to call to have an actual argument on either side?
Pro-AI posts and posters are cringe AF, and the anti-AI thing is just declarations of absolute truth.

I guess I'm the stupid one trying to get intellectual stimulation out of the internet.
