spooky donkey herder 👻
And one of Legs and Lancer. They simply won’t stop fighting like cockerels and I’ve had to accept that they *are* little cockerels. Sigh.
Legs, the one closest to the camera, was laid by Zelda, my buff Brahma. She’s my heavyweight hen, and Presley is a tank of a rooster. Legs got it from both parents, plus his legs have yellow skin with black scales *and* feathers. Legs is happy to fight it out with slightly-smaller Lancer, and I’m expecting a lot of full on rooster dominance challenges in the spring.
But at least he’s pretty! Legs inherited his dad’s shade of black, the kind with strong undertones of blue and violet, and his dad’s rust-marked wings.
Lancer, in the background, has always been the Other One. Everybody else was distinctive in some way — the unfortunate Jimmy’s Hapsburg jaw, Legs’ gams, all black Contra, and (not photographed today but still alive) Flasher’s unpigmented face and lower jaw plus her one white feather hidden in a wing. Lancer is just the one who’s left by process of elimination, poor guy. At least the chickens hardly care what we think of them!
#chickens #chicks
