Bevan Thomas<p>According to legend, Bladud was a king of Britain who founded the city of Bath. He was also a wizard, and created magic wings to fly. However, like Icarus, Bladud flew too high, and his wings failed, so he fell to his death. His son was Shakespeare's King Lear.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/LegendaryWednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LegendaryWednesday</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Folklore</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/BritishFolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BritishFolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Mythology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mythology</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/BritishMythology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BritishMythology</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Britain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Britain</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Magic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Magic</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Shakespeare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Shakespeare</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/KingLear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KingLear</span></a></p>

Man in the Woods<p>🔔🦌 The bishop dismantled the old cathedral and built his new one down in the valley. It sits on only 4 foot of foundations, but its spire rises to 400 foot! Slowly the rest of the people moved down into the valley and settled around the cathedral. And Old Salisbury (now called Old Sarum) up on the hill was abandoned.<br>

Man in the Woods<p>🔔🦌 The arrow was shot. It flew far through the air, and dipped below the trees into some distant meadow. So the bishop and his followers walked out. When they finally found the arrow, they were astonished. It had hit and killed a huge old stag which lay dead on the ground in a water meadow. Well, this wet place might not seem like the best place to build a huge stone cathedral, but God had spoken.<br>

Man in the Woods<p>🔔🦌 Well, one day the bishop decided enough was enough, and he started planning to move the cathedral down into the welcoming, protected river valley. But he needed to convince people by showing that God was on his side. He asked the town’s best archer to shoot an arrow from the top of the city walls and he said that God would make it land in the perfect place for his new cathedral.<br>

Man in the Woods<p>🔔🦌 This old fortified hilltop city of Salisbury was easily defendable. But fresh water was a long walk away, down in the valley below. And on those cold, winter nights, this the city was a miserable and windy place to be.<br>

Man in the Woods<p>Can I tell you a story? 🔔🦌 The small cathedral city of Salisbury in Wiltshire lives in a river valley today. But 800 years ago it was actually a couple of miles away up on a nearby hill. The place had been significant for thousands of years, and it had been fortified over and over again, by the Iron Age people, and the Anglo-Saxon and Norman rulers of Britain.<br>

Man in the Woods<p>🪱🐉 The young woman woke up as the log started to writhe and wriggle towards Cheddar Gorge with her on it. Without realising what it was, she took out her axe and cleft the Werm in two. One half wiggled south towards Taunton and the other north towards Portishead. The villagers were safe now. Most people say the Werm is dead. But some say one half survived. Man in the Woods<p>🪱🐉 She was one of those people who is prepared for all eventualities: a trug for foraged fruit, an axe for firewood, and a jug to fill with local cyder at any opportunity. Well, what she was not prepared for was the Gurt Werm. And so after a hot afternoon’s walking and berry-picking she happily had a little snooze on a huge log. As thick as a 500 year old oak, they say.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/somerset" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>somerset</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/britishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>britishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/englishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>englishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/westcountry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>westcountry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/storytelling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>storytelling</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/folklore" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>folklore</span></a></span> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gurtwerm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gurtwerm</span></a></p>
Man in the Woods<p>🪱🐉 Many months had passed since the sad day that woman was snapped by the Werm. Myrtleberry season was approaching, but the villagers had no intention of tempting fate. Unfortunately, news of the Werm had not reached as far as Bristol, and one sunny afternoon a young Bristolian wanderer found herself up on the Mendip feeling very lucky to have found so many unpicked myrtleberries.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/somerset" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>somerset</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/britishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>britishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/englishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>englishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/westcountry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>westcountry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/storytelling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>storytelling</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/folklore" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>folklore</span></a></span> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gurtwerm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gurtwerm</span></a></p>
Man in the Woods<p>🪱🐉 The Werm slithered back down to its cave and ate the woman. Over the coming months farmers reported sheep and cows being taken off by the Gurt Werm. Soghtings commonly described it as being as thick as a 500 year old oak. Months went by. The lcoals stayed away from the hills and away from the gorge. They were scared but safe in their village. Or so they thought.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/somerset" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>somerset</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/britishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>britishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/englishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>englishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/westcountry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>westcountry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/storytelling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>storytelling</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/folklore" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>folklore</span></a></span> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gurtwerm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gurtwerm</span></a></p>
Man in the Woods<p>🪱🐉 But one day those rumours became a bit more solid. It was coming to the end of myrtleberry season and so locals were busy collecting the last of those delicious wild blueberries up on the Mendip hills. But that was brought to a sharp end when the GURT WERM one day crawled up out of a gorge and grabbed a woman in its jaws in front of eight other berry pickers.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/somerset" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>somerset</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/britishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>britishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/englishfolklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>englishfolklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/westcountry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>westcountry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/storytelling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>storytelling</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/folklore" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>folklore</span></a></span> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gurtwerm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gurtwerm</span></a></p>
Man in the Woods<p>Can I tell you a story? 🪱🐉 In a sleepy village in Somerset, in the southwest of Britain, the locals once told tales of the dreaded GURT WERM. Gurt is a local word meaning big or great, and what they described as a werm or worm is what we might now think of as a dragon. Anyway, there were always rumours in the air. Someone’s seen this.
