My recreational bicycling club (TBN¹) is having our annual Spring Kickoff breakfast and rides this coming Saturday, May 10th at Etienne Brulé Park, on what the forecast says should be a great day. Since we're trying to recruit, attendance is free for non-members. They say 'register so we can plan food', but if past years are any guide there will be lots available, so you can just show up without much problems. For details, see tbn.ca/event-6101402

City of Toronto proposed "returning two car lanes to University Avenue near the city’s hospital row, narrowing the bike lanes and removing on-street parking."

I can't wait for the guaranteed next stage where car drivers suddenly claim that the on-street parking which takes up a lane is critical and must be retained.

Global News · Ontario open to compromise with Toronto on bike lane removalsBy The Canadian Press

Ford promised bike lane removals could happen today onward in TO (Bloor W, Yonge, & Uni). That means we’ve got to be vigilant & have our eyes open. If you see construction crews amassing to remove lanes, post/tag local cycling orgs & advocates. Send pictures. Be safe & don’t interfere.

If you see bike lanes being removed, please report it to

Obviously not everything is won. They might find another consulting firms that is less shameful. And #CycleToronto encourage us to email them so that they don't deliver the 1.5KM of scope they decided to keep.

But we are slowing the project, potentially saving lives and hopefully leaving more time for the courts to fight it.

It does set a precedent for other firms. Taking contract from the government doesn't mean it's ethical and you can get a PR nightmare out of it.

Well that is interesting.

There was a public shaming campaign against #Stantec engineering firm because of their contract with the Ontario government to destroy our bike lanes in Toronto. There was protests at their office downtown Toronto + an email campaign by #CycleToronto

I personally sent 2 emails to their Media person, Colin Nekolaichuk

Well within Cycle Toronto newsletter, we learn that they gave up on the majority of the project (!!) and will only deliver a small part

As one protester was being released by police, he flashed an iron engineer’s ring on his pinky finger to a cheering crowd.

This is actually what I wrote in my email to Stantec last month. As engineers and people who went through the engineering oath, we have duty to safeguard the public. Destroying bike lanes without buildling alternate ones is the opposite of that.

Welp, I missed the group meetup but I still went out for an excellent winter jaunt through the city. Exchanged coffees with @dfraser, hit all my errand stops, and managed to lug a 10kg UPS back up the Bathurst hill from Spadina/College in that yawning black hole of a messenger bag I use for this kind of ill-advised errand.

Lovely day so far, and there is still sunlight in the sky! #dlws #bikeTO #mastobikes

(That's Timm's wild rainbow Brompton there, from Pedaal.)

I don't want to jinx it, but so far Toronto's Snowpocalyse mark III(?) doesn't seem to be much, which opens up hope in my heart that the streets will remain clear enough for tomorrow's scheduled "Coldest Day of the Year" ride, cycleto.ca/coldest_day_2025 (10:30 am meeting, 11 am departure).

Since I don't go on 100% of the rides I don't prepare for, I'm currently making sure my bike lights are charged up and so on. And keeping my fingers crossed.
