MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History November 27, 1835: James Pratt and John Smith were hanged in London, the last two people to be executed for sodomy in England. William Bonill, whose room it was, was transported to Australia as an accessory to the crime, where he died. They were convicted entirely on the testimony of the landlord, who had been spying on them through the keyhole. In 2017, they were posthumously pardoned under the Alan Turing Law, an amnesty law that pardoned British men who had previously been convicted of sodomy. The law was named for mathematician, cryptologist and computer scientist Alan Turing. Home Secretary, Lord Russell, argued for a commutation of the death sentences, stating: “It is the only crime where there is no injury done to any individual and in consequence it requires a very small expense to commit it in so private a manner and to take such precautions as shall render conviction impossible. It is also the only capital crime that is committed by rich men but owing to the circumstances I have mentioned they are never convicted.”</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/homophobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homophobia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/deathpenalty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deathpenalty</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/alanturing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>alanturing</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/deportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deportation</span></a></p>

Mehrad :kde: :emacs: :rstats:<p>While doing literature review for my thesis, I fell into the rabbit hole of references and stumbled upon a reference to Alan Turing's 1950 paper in which he explains the imitation game. It is an astonishing paper. I strongly suggest reading it, both for historical reasons, and as a solid article in computer science:</p><p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/mind/LIX.236.433" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">doi.org/10.1093/mind/LIX.236.4</span><span class="invisible">33</span></a></p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/AlanTuring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AlanTuring</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/phdlife" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>phdlife</span></a></span> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ComputerScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ComputerScience</span></a></p>

My dad was at university with <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/AlanTuring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AlanTuring</span></a>. Not Cambridge-undergraduate-era Turing, but at <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/Manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Manchester</span></a> university in the 50s.</p><p>My dad didn't really hang out with him but he saw him around, and was curious about these newfangled "computers" that Turing was working on.</p><p>He asked his maths tutor if there was anything to this new technology and the tutor scoffed at it and told my dad not to bother, it wasn't anything he needed to pay attention to.</p><p>Not exactly sure what the moral of this story is but I wish my dad had bought Turing a cup of tea sometime and asked him what he was working on.</p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>Today marks the 70th anniversary of Alan Turing's death. A man to whom we all, tech enthusiasts and beyond, owe so much. Yet, society at the time treated him very, very poorly, quickly forgetting his contributions in the name of a morality that would change just a few years later. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/AlanTuring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AlanTuring</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Anniversary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Anniversary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/TechHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TechHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ComputingPioneer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ComputingPioneer</span></a></p>
