Christoff, the human<p>Hey, I'm chasing that early computing life I wasn't able to have myself and was fascinated by, and ultimately what got me into computing and keeps me in computing.</p><p>Not ashamed to admit it. </p><p>- Working on learning to code <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/C64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>C64</span></a> assembly and <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/8BitComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8BitComputing</span></a> in general.<br>- Working on learning exactly all a <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/BBS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BBS</span></a> actually is and coding one.<br>- Reusing existing skillsets for coding/sysadmin/dba/hacker for it, but in this origin story <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/nostalgia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nostalgia</span></a> I never got in its entirety. </p><p>I saw a tape deck at a 2nd hand store the other day and was reminded of a math teacher showing me it could be used for data storage with computers.</p><p>I also feel fortunate that at this stage in my life I'm secure in my career (as much as I can be anyway), so I can relax a little on the hustle of skill improvement solely for work and all that.</p>

Sidde<p>Almost a year ago and days from my birthday I got my <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Mega65" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mega65</span></a> delivered to the door. Within minutes I open up the package and started playing with my new toy.</p><p>And of course I forgot to pause and appreciate the time someone spent creating the cover art. So today I'm doing just that. The mega comes in a really nice box and it really creates the feeling of a true birthday present! </p><p><a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/8bitcomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8bitcomputing</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/8bit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8bit</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/unboxing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>unboxing</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/C65" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>C65</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/C64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>C64</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Commodore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Commodore</span></a></p>

Tim<p>Last night I spent some time building an adapter to connect the C64 6510 CPU to the C16. I burnt a modified KERNAL ROM image from Andy @ hackjunk.com and was surprised to see I still couldn't access my Pi1541.</p><p>Silly me naïvely didn't follow the wiring diagrams for the CPU adapter and just sort of wired the external registers with a "near enough is good enough" approach, P0 to P0, P1 to P1 etc. A couple of the registers are actually supposed to be swapped over.</p><p>After correcting my mistake, the C16 boots! I've given the case a wash and pulled the keycaps off. The keyboard fully works but it is filthy.</p><p>To do:<br>Clean keycaps and reassemble case<br>Install diode for cassette motor line<br>Look into modding to increase RAM to 64k<br>Clean and repair datasette and joystick</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/CBM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CBM</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Commodore16" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Commodore16</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/CommodoreComputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommodoreComputer</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/8bitComputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8bitComputer</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/8bitComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8bitComputing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/retroComputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retroComputers</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/retroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retroComputing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a></p>
Tim<p>Another C64 back from the dead! This one arrived to me with a black screen and no indicators from the dead test.</p><p>Bad RAM, all but one of the MT brand ICs was dead, then one of my new old stock RAM ICs had a stuck address line. The KERNAL is dead as well so I'll have to make an adaptor for the 27C64 EPROM I put in its place (currently breadboarded). The SID seems to a bit tired too with one of the channels sounding off.</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/8BitComputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8BitComputer</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/8BitComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8BitComputing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Commodore64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Commodore64</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/CommodoreForever" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommodoreForever</span></a><br><a href="https://aus.social/tags/RetroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/RetroComputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputers</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/C64Repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>C64Repair</span></a></p>
