2. I need 5 names of research institutions (as above) that maintain their own instances.
3. Also, I vaguely remember that there is one or more instances "for #scientists" -- will appreciate the address(es).

@8petros I’m terrible at discerning which scientists are prominent and I don’t remember any research institutions’ addresses (although I think I remember seeing at least one university once) so I cannot help with 1 or 2. As for 3 there is
- mathstodon.xyz for mathematicians and people interested in mathematics in general
- types.pl for type theorists (technically a subtype[sic] of the above)
- fediscience.org – a generic place for scientists
- astrodon.social – for people interested in astowhatever (not -logy though), a lot of scientists in practice
- dair-community.social – huh, that technically falls under 2., although as a research institution they don’t have a lot of output yet; anyway, social impacts of contemporary AI
And that’s all I could find among people I follow, hope it helps at least a bit.

@chlopmarcin I considered mentioning QOTO, but in practice it's a generalist instance, with a slight bent towards science stuff. On second thought it might be worth mentioning depending on what the person asking a question wanted to know, so good that you mentioned it. @8petros
