Server fatigue is real. On platforms like Mastodon, admins sometimes just delete servers, wiping out whole communities

@alex explains how nostr offers a promising future for new communities, eliminating the risk of disappearing servers, in BR079.

Not mention securing Keys. Profile is secure as long as your key don't leak. I know there are some sort of wallets etc. But it's more geek than mastodon.
@deep @AubreyDeLosDestinos @0371db7fd4437ce63e60dedc313cad6ee8b17fc691fe05231f9a140134fc0d08 Versus a server getting hacked and everybody's private messages getting leaked at once. This leaves people helpless and wishing they had some control over the situation. Holding a key is such a small responsibility compared to every user running their own server, but gives them the same amount of freedom if not more.

@alex @0371db7fd4437ce63e60dedc313cad6ee8b17fc691fe05231f9a140134fc0d08 @deep Yes, you are right in technical aspects, but that is very high entry barrier.

I remember how much confusion was to explain to people from Twitter that there is no single entity and instead, you need to choose one and talk to anothers. With relays, it's even more confusing because you don't have even that.

The onboarding process in Nostr might be eased with apps, for instance, Amethyst will create a private key for you, but backing this key, etc. Good luck with adopting this. I just don't see that happening in this generation.

The issue here is not as technological as UX-related.

@alex @0371db7fd4437ce63e60dedc313cad6ee8b17fc691fe05231f9a140134fc0d08 @deep I managed, so we're good, but I use keys to access various repos at work and it's not an issue for me. Wider adoption, however, tsk, that's another aspect. And no amount of “keys are safer” will change that.

@AubreyDeLosDestinos @0371db7fd4437ce63e60dedc313cad6ee8b17fc691fe05231f9a140134fc0d08 @deep Downloading the key as a file solves most of the UX issues with it IMO. On some phones this will even pop up an option to "Save to Google Drive" etc automatically.

@alex @0371db7fd4437ce63e60dedc313cad6ee8b17fc691fe05231f9a140134fc0d08 @deep Don't get me wrong, I kind of like the concept, and I saw mostly kind and polite people there, but level of nerdness might be an issue. This also translates to oversaturation with Bitcoin there, which might not be appealing to be hit with initially. That being said, I'm following the progress. There is certainly a lot of positive energy in the community.

@AubreyDeLosDestinos @alex @0371db7fd4437ce63e60dedc313cad6ee8b17fc691fe05231f9a140134fc0d08 @deep The amount of Bitcoin talk could put off wider adoption, I think. Most people are not on social media to talk about money or to try and make money. And crypto currencies are suspect to a lot of people.

I think the onboarding issues are probably overstated. People are used to passwords and increasingly double authentication. Public/private keys are not much more of a hassle than those, and it's not as though someone's asking you for biometrics.

How good the clients are is what will really matter, coupled with the chicken and egg problem.
wait is gleasonator back on sb+rb or is this ditto now
