Boyd Stephen Smith Jr.<p>I have an APC Back-UPS XS 1500 LCD <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/UPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UPS</span></a> with a dead-ish battery. I've actually replaced the battery several times, so that's certainly a option.</p><p>But, is there a better, more Free Hardware / Software solution? The monitoring I get from apcupsd is _okay_, but I'm hoping there's something better out there. The battery life is ... pretty poor, both for how long it will keep my current system powered (I shouldn't ask for much, but it never lasted long enough the computer would stay on until the back-up generators for the building kicked on) and for total longevity, I'm almost 100% sure this battery is at *most* 4 years old, and I think it might only be 2 or 3.</p><p>Please send links and share if you'd like. I'll probably go battery shopping on Monday if no other solutions attract my eye. Thanks for your attention.</p>

And that a <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/miniPC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>miniPC</span></a> has much better computation power comparing to something like <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a>. I had plans for a <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/homeserver" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homeserver</span></a> and I wanted to use my <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/LibreComputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LibreComputer</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/Alta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Alta</span></a> and utilize its <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/npu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>npu</span></a>. </p><p>Libre Computer boards have really good prices comparing to the performance they provide comparing to other ARM SBCs such as <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/RPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RPi</span></a>. But it seems for having a homeserver to <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/selfhost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhost</span></a> things, if we factor out power usage, an old mini PC is better than a new ARM SBC.</p><p>However, if we also consider power usage, the abovementioned LibreComputer board consumes only 15 W under full load. And the old Ryzen 5 on that HP mini PC has a TDP of 35 W. This affects running cost of your homeserver and also the cost for the <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/UPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UPS</span></a>. But for myself, there isn't a big deal between 15W and 35W.</p><p>Edit: Comments or advises are very welcome!</p><p><a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/selfhosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosting</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/selfhostingjourney" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhostingjourney</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/selfhostingchronicles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhostingchronicles</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/serverathome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>serverathome</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/server" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>server</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/geek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geek</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/geekful" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geekful</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/geeks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geeks</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/nerd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nerd</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/nerds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nerds</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/nerdy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nerdy</span></a></p>

Maggie Maybe<p>Is this real?<br>Does this sound real? If a US company ships to Canada expecting the customer to pay tariffs &amp; they don’t, the US company gets hit with tariffs just to receive the return??</p><p>“So the weirdest thing happened, I had received an email from <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/UPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UPS</span></a> stating that they have a package that needs to be returned back to us because a customer in <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> who ordered from us flat out refused to pay the usual custom fees &amp; duties plus the <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/tariff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tariff</span></a> costs. Even I thought the amount sounded outrageous and someone was lying so I contacted the customer and she stated they wanted an additional $100 for the products and she didn’t realize how much or how high the costs were due to the tariffs and proceeded to ask us for a refund. I said even though we never allow refunds on cosmetics, we will make an exception this one time minus all the shipping costs and fees if any. I proceeded to call ups and tell them to go ahead and return the package back to us and we approve UPS to go back into our account again and take the return shipping fee this time around for $38 “Return Shipping Costs” to the USA, I explained to ups that we are going to get our money back through the customers refund. The UPS Rep said, “I hope her refund is big enough to cover all cost because $38 is just for the return shipping, we Will also Need the <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/customs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>customs</span></a> fees, duty taxes &amp; any <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/import" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>import</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/fees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fees</span></a> for this box to be shipped back to The United States”.. Total costs: $169 - I couldn’t believe it and said this is something I’ve never experienced or had to deal with in the 7 years I’ve been in business shipping worldwide! So I told UPS to just keep it or Destroy it! At the end it was not worth us paying out all that money to Ship these two little skincare items back to the USA that were worth $50 bucks Each. I explained to the customer there is no zero funds being returned to her and after all fees have been calculated, we would have owed her five dollars for a refund if that. so refusing the package is the worst thing you can do cause now you are out the money and the products just like we are.”</p>
Edwin Mons<p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/UPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UPS</span></a> is by far the most unreliable and annoying delivery service.
