Ubuntu Adds Official Support for NVIDIA Jetson AI Modules

Canonical has announced that it now ‘officially supports’ Ubuntu on NVIDIA Jetson, a series of computing modules designed for AI and machine learning applications. The General Availability (GA) of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS for the NVIDIA Jetson Orin brings “optimized performance, out-of-the-box compatibility, and an easy pathway to high-performance AI solutions for AI developers everywhere“, say Canonical. Offering Ubuntu certified images for cutting-edge hardware is something Canonical has been ramping up, and doing so for NVIDIA Jetson modules should provide a lure to developers wanting to leverage them for edge AI, robotics and other uses. Our collaboration with NVIDIA represents a :sys_more_orange:

Immutable root fs is one of the things that drew me toward Qubes OS back in 2013.

But the read-only-like (non)persistence boundary in Qubes consists of a virtual machine boundary under a bare-metal hypervisor (Xen). Ubuntu relying on the Linux kernel to protect the fs means it is much more susceptible to being breached, owning to Linux's far larger attack surface and monolithic nature. #ubuntu #ubuntucore #qubesos

Immutable, All-Snap Ubuntu Desktop Coming Next Year

An all-snap Ubuntu desktop is coming — and sooner than you might think! According to Canonical’s Oliver Grawert, the next long-term support release of Ubuntu will be available to download in two versions: a classic, deb-based version and, for the first time, as an immutable, snap-based build too. You can’t see me but I can assure you that I’m pulling my best faux-shocked face right now. Why the snark? Well, let’s face it: an all-snap Ubuntu desktop is inevitable. If I’m surprised by anything it’s not that it’s happening next April, but that it has taken this long to happen :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Core 22 Released for IoT and Embedded Device Makers

A new version of Ubuntu Core is available to download. For those unaware, of it Ubuntu Core is Canonical’s streamlined Ubuntu spin targeted at embedded devices, IoT, and other industrial hardware. It is a containerised version of regular Ubuntu boasting a small footprint, super-secure design, and support for transactional software updates using Snaps. Ubuntu Core 22 is the latest release and as you may be able to tell from its version number it’s based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. It is backed by 10 years of security maintenance of kernel, OS and application-level code updates from Canonical. To be clear: Ubuntu Core isn’t the :sys_more_orange:

Canonical, NASA, and Award-Winning Artist Team Up for Space Art Project

Canonical today announced new partnerships with NASA, the International Space Station (ISS) and award winning artist. Ubuntu (indeed Linux in general) is already used in a variety of practical space applications, from powering smart robots to helping rovers rove. But one area they’ve yet to boldly go is in to the realm of cosmic creativity. Until now, that is. Boundary-pushing artist Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm and her team at ARTificial Mind hope to “advance the next epoch of digital art”. Their artistic tools of choice? Ubuntu Core, artificial intelligence, and, er, the universe. The far-out composition is called “Celestium“. It’s described :sys_more_orange:
