Because contrary to many of his peers Eguchi's girls were pretty but not designed for the male gaze. This wasn't accidental because he wasn't drawing the object of his desires but rather what he would have wanted to be. In his own words:

> The ideal girl for me is the one I would have wanted to become if I was born a girl, it is not the girl I would dream to date, it is really the frustration of not being born as a girl which fuels my drawings.

Given today is #TransDayOfVisibility here's an interesting tidbit: among the flood of AI generated slop that's been thrown around you'll find plenty of AI-generated fake '80s japanese synthpop music usually presented with images of pretty girls as the cover image. The style used for the girls in those videos is very often a shameful ripoff of Hisashi Eguchi's. A mangaka known for his beautiful and fashionable drawings. Why is that relevant today?

"Think of what we are seeing today as a pilot project: The lessons that authoritarians learn from attacking the transgender community can be applied to target other groups they hate — or that might oppose them."

A closing thought for #TDoV / #TransDayOfVisibility, on the less joyful side

Even among the people who love us, sometimes it feels like we can only exist in one of two states:

  • highly fetishized dehumanized sexual objects
  • sexless, sexuality-less, romanceless entities from beyond

and that sucks

I am privileged to know so many truly superb people, & many of the best of them are trans.

Each day they fight for their existence. To prove their worth in a world blinded by bigotry, they not only succeed in their professions, they excel.

This effort is exhausting, yet with our help it will have an end. See them as the people they are & lift them up in their bravery. If we're there for them, maybe if we're fortunate one day they won't need our support.

We see you.

It took me until I was 41 to get over my fear and deal with being gay. It was scary, also the single most important event of my life.

On this #TransDayOfVisibility I just want say I am absolutely in awe of your courage and sheer fucking awesomeness to be who you are.

Every. Single. One. Of. You.

I remember when I started questioning my gender identity, then at the realization I am trans and even after the first couple of years of hormone therapy; #TransDayOfVisibility came and went and I still wasn't presenting anywhere as a woman. I was afraid, fearful and even after a couple of years of medical transition felt I was in an awkward physical stage of transition that I just couldn't bring myself to show myself to the world.

But I so desperately wanted people to see me. I wanted to be visible with other trans people on this day.

There are lot of our trans siblings who don't feel safe being visible for whatever reason, especially now. You want to show yourself but for whatever reason feel you can't. I've been there. We've all been there.

But WE see you. Your trans sisters, trans brothers and enby siblings SEE you.

And those who *can* be visible...
will be for all of us.
We will not be erased.

I'm having really complicated feelings this #TransDayOfVisibility. I feel like my relationship with gender is so different from what most people think of when they hear that term that I think it would be misleading to call myself trans, but I do feel kinship with trans people. I know some people define trans broadly enough to include me. I appreciate that.

We were thinking of our #trans friends and family with every keystroke as we created realstonewall.com/

Because their contributions to our country deserve RECOGNITION and CELEBRATION! We SEE you! And we will not let ANYONE forget the gifts you have given us!
