Frequently and casually, people tell me that their unforeseen ancestry somehow accounts for their personalities based on national stereotypes, and these are invariably positive or attractive traits: fiery Spaniards, for instance, or methodical Germans, passionate French, hardy Scots. No one has ever said to me that it is their ancestry that accounts for the fact that they are weak-willed, or scared of spiders, or that they're lily-livered.

Here, we assess how variation in plant performance away from their #climate #niche centers (e.g., increased versus decreased abundance change in sites cooler than niche center) is related to #traits. We find that shorter species with more resource acquistive leaf strategies are most likely to increase performance in sites cooler than their niche center.

I'm an ecologist studying #plant #soil interactions in the context of #CarbonCycling as a #postdoc at the Dept. for Aquatic Ecology and Environmental Biology at Radboud Universiteit.
My #research focuses mostly on #peatlands, and unites concepts from these #wetlands and mineral soils.

Trait-based ecology is not yet predictive because the proliferation of new metrics muddied the waters.
Where others zig, we zag.
We propose testing old theories with new data.
We advocate for the ubiquitous power law and argue environmental variability in space and time fundamentally shapes trait variation.

The #Rust #programming #language lets us implement a trait on any local struct. Naively I hoped to use traits as a way to avoid code duplication, since duplicated code leads to technical debt. That's how I use interfaces and abstract implementations in object-oriented languages like #java and #php.
With Rust: not so much.
