Capping or otherwise limiting various kinds of damages has long been part of the right’s effort to make it easier for risk creators to injure other people without having to be civilly (as opposed to criminally) accountable; in other words, to make it cheaper to hurt people. Atlanta Community Press Collective has just released this video in the direct aftermath of the police murder of #Tortuguita in the Weelaunne forest on January 18th.
They write:
"Moments after police opened fire on Tortugita, killing them, and Atlanta Police officer can be heard saying, "Man...you fucked your own officer up?" in reference to the trooper that was also shot."
"The struggle in Atlanta’s Weelaunee forest and against Cop City has been waged on many fronts: treesits, rallies, community meetings, targeted property destruction, lawsuits. Recently, police attacks and the assassination of Tortuguita dealt many of us a devastating blow. But the choice by Mayor Dickens to continue with Cop City in the face of mounting nationwide opposition also poses risks for the Atlanta ruling class. Today in #Atlanta, just as the family of Manuel #Tortuguita Teran was giving a press conference about how an independent autopsy reveled that Teran was executed in a barrage of over 13 bullets on January 18th, a vast army of various law enforcement agencies was deploying into the Weelaunee forest.
One journalist reported, it "looks like a war zone right now. Heavily-armed members of law enforcement are clearing out the forest and have escorted in construction workers to make way for the facility."
Calls for solidarity and 'weeks of action' have been broadcast over movement media accounts like @defendATLforest.

In #Columbus, #Georgia, more than 120 riot police and under-covers monitored a rally of less than a dozen people, who was holding a vigil for murdered forest defender, #Tortuguita.
The Mayor claimed that police would break up and arrest a crowd of more than 15 people. Protest went on anyway in defiance of threats from the state. Rally took place outside of Brasfield & Gorrie construction site; a company which is contracted to build Cop City in #Atlanta.
"Grist’s review of 20 arrest warrants shows that none of those arrested and slapped with terrorism charges are accused of seriously injuring anyone. Nine are alleged to have committed no specific illegal actions beyond misdemeanor trespassing. Instead, their mere association with a group committed to defending the forest appears to be the foundation for declaring them terrorists.
Georgia’s terror law passed in response to high-profile mass shootings including the 2015 massacre of nine Black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, by white supremacist Dylann Roof. The 2017 law expanded the definition of “domestic terrorism” from its original designation as an act intended to kill or injure at least 10 people to one encompassing a range of property crimes."
Yet another reason why Centrist calls for more domestic terrorism laws aren't going to do anything but give the State more tools to smash social movements from below.

The group protesting in Columbus has not received a city permit to protest, Henderson said. Under city ordinance, protests with more than 15 people must be permitted. “If the crowd gets larger than 15 people, we will disperse it,” [Mayor] Henderson said.
