Aulia Masna
Mass protests across 14 Indonesian cities rejecting the newly passed military legislation allowing active members to hold civilian government and private sector positions. Mass violence by cops and the military against protesters, illegal seizure of ambulance by the police, members of parliament clashing with protesters, and Jakarta is about to unleash its latest wave of protests tomorrow outside of the parliament building.

This is building up to match the 1998 anti government civil disobedience crisis. Hopefully it won’t devolve into mass riots, waves of racial violence, and private property looting and destruction like it did back then.

The state of the economy isn’t great either despite statements from the President and Ministers. Since the President slashed the national budget to fund the free school meal program and the sovereign fund Danantara (more than $20 billion each), government projects and programs have been cut, contractors are struggling, and consumer spending collapsed.

We also have had mass layoffs in the tens of thousands across various industries including manufacturing, since January. Adrianna Tan
When I was in college in Singapore, I lived walking distance from Little India. I was a bit of a night owl then. Most of my friends were students from India and Nepal. No special reason, it just was. I found the local Singaporean students very boring and I never got on with them (I’m Singaporean).

One of my friends from Nepal took me to an apartment in little India where you had to knock a secret knock, then someone would open, and if they recognized you, they’d open the door and you could go in and sit in the living room and they’d give you homemade noodles, momo and tea.

The other customers were often Bhutanese monks and Nepali salespeople. My friend introduced me to everyone.

Sometimes when I see the shiny fancy veneer of shiny Singapore, I remember how my favorite parts of Singapore are these fleeting moments and spaces I got to experience as a local with deep networks and curiosity. I prefer that Singapore of my memories.

#Singapore #TootSea #Food

Adrianna Tan
Singapore academic Donald Low writes about the thing I've been worried about: Singapore's 'born again Chinese', or ethnic Chinese people in the diaspora who have been targeted by CCP propaganda in social media and chat groups

I was starting to see people say things like 'oh, I will only use the Chinese vaccine, it was created for Chinese people' and I just could not believe what I was hearing. Not isolated cases too: lots and lots of people. Especially Boomers.

A lot of this is just step one towards challenges to national sovereignty (Singapore is also a Chinese state so you belong to us), and worsens racial issues in the country by emphasizing more 'Chineseness' (already the majority group there with oppressive features)

#Singapore #TootSea #China

Adrianna Tan
So the news about a Singapore political party coming out (haha) as anti-LGBTQ is very timely because the ruling party is likely going to field a LGBTQ activist. She will likely win due to the ‘unique’ traits of our political system (you vote for a group of people rather than an individual, most places). But comparing the anti vote to the regular anti vote will give you a good electoral indicator of how strong homophobia really is (I’m guessing not really)

#Singapore #TootSea #LGBTQ

Adrianna Tan
Sometimes I think about how the world would taste so different without Maggi. Who would’ve thought they would have figured out the different flavor profiles for each part of the world. I don’t think about Swiss food very much, but their impact in world food cannot be underestimated (mostly through Maggi).

One of my comfort foods is maggi brand instant ‘curry noodles’ (the one made for the Malaysian market). My friends from India love the Indian one, but I don’t, it’s not my comfort food (also Malaysian Maggi is spicier, hehe).

Maggi sauce also has a distinct flavor. The bánh mì around me would all taste different without it, and so would a lot of Latin American and African foods.

I can get nearly everything I want from ‘home’ here in SF but Malaysian maggi is what I get people to bring me. Especially the too spicy for most other flavors, like the one called kari api (curry fire) noodles.

This Malaysian chef in London has a video about how to recreate it from scratch: https://youtu.be/V_0UknLho5U

#Food #Malaysia #TootSea

Aulia Masna
The five month saga is finally over. Apple will be allowed to sell the full range of the iPhone 16 series in Indonesia within weeks.

Nikkei says this deal with Indonesia is a win for Apple but that is by far a complete misreading of the situation. This is not a win for Apple because they had to:

• invest $160 million as part of its continuing education and R&D commitment until 2029 (a 60% increase over the previous 5 year term)
• get Luxshare to invest $150 million for an AirTag plant
• engage a local vendor to supply AirPods Max fabric
• on top of the existing Apple Developer Academy establish a Professional Developer Academy, a Software Innovation Technology Institute, and work with 15 universities for a brand new R&D center
• share a roadmap for Apple manufacturing until 2029 with the government

All this so the company can continue to sell iPhones in the country until 2029. What happens after 2029? Apple must commit to another phase of investment to be negotiated closer to the expiry date of this next one and ensure that nothing gets left undone. In the previous phase, for what ever reason the company did not pay the last $10 million of its $100 million investment until this month. It was due in June 2023.

The government press release mentioned that this will be the first Apple R&D center outside of the United States and Brazil but I’m sure there’s a misunderstanding because Apple’s largest research facility opened in China last October.

Indonesia strong armed Apple to spend over $1 billion or face a lost growing market where the iPhone had an 11% overall share last year and more than 40% share of premium smartphone market above $600.

https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/10/11/apples-largest-research-lab-outside-the-us-opens-in-china

https://kemenperin.go.id/artikel/25750/Kemenperin-Hasilkan-Kesepakatan-Menguntungkan-bagi-Merah-Putih-dari-Negosiasi-dengan-Apple

#Apple #Indonesia #TootSEA @Techmeme
