Angry Metal Guy
Warfield – With the Old Breed Review

By Steel Druhm

German thrashers Warfield created a bit of buzz for themselves with their 2018 debut Wrecking Command, borrowing extensively from famous forefathers like Sodom and Kreator and infusing the speed with traces of black metal fury. It was a spirited and venomous slab of reckless haste with enough modern-day appeal to escape the sucking vortex of niche re-thrash. After 4-plus years, we get With the Old Breed and Warfield are older, wiser, and a bit less rough and raw. They still sound like a motley mash-up of Sodom and Kreator with a toe in the blackened bog, but they’ve refined and slightly polished their sound. Will this take away some of their angry vitality and uncouth charm?

Before you think With the Old Breed is lacking in rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth intensity, meet opener “Melting Mass.” It’s an ugly, greasy, Sodom-esque thrasher with corpse scum under its fingernails, and Johannes Clemens’ delivery sits at the crossroads of Tom Angelripper and Kreator’s Mille. He sounds plenty pissed off and savage and the riffs by Matthias Clemens are appropriately nasty and jagged. At points, it sounds like Johannes is yelling about cake and amputation, and Lord knows we’ve all been there. It’s a no-nonsense thrash bomb, and it elevates the blood temperature as it should. “Soul Conqueror” reminds me a lot of Grip Inc. with Mille taking over vocals, and “Tie the Rope” leans into the blackened thrash influence extra hard for a rancid piece of speed excess with bits of Witchery in its DNA. It will make you want to bite your neighbors and savor the community flavor. The band’s overall commitment to excess and overdrive keeps the songs in that speed sweet spot, and the guitar work is high-level and gripping.

Later on, “Fragmentation” has a central riff that sounds a whole lot like the one from the classic Sisters of Mercy tune “Vision Thing,” and I can’t unhear it, but the crazed vocals and gang shouts keep things moving regardless. Warfield go for the big, epic tune on “GASP,” blending traditional thrash tropes with black metal, doom, and mild symphonic elements, and for the most part, it alchemy works, but there are segments that drag noticeably, and at 7 minutes, it ends feeling too long for its own good. A few songs hit as fairly generic too, like “Inhibition Atrophy” and “Dogs for Defense.” They aren’t bad, just sort of run-of-the-mill thrash fare. The 42-plus minute length is reasonable, but the placement of “GASP” in the penultimate spot makes it hard to properly appreciate it as thrash fatigue is already beginning to set in. What you end up with is a respectable thrash album with some raging highs, while the lows are manageable.

For a 3-piece, Warfield throw a lot of loud shrapnel around. Matthias Clemens’ fretboard gymnastics pervade every inch of the runtime, assaulting you from all sides with riffs, solos, and MOAR riffs. He’s like a fusion reactor of string abuse. He keeps the runaway train on the tracks, and a lot of his riffs stick to the brainpan like tar. Johannes Clemens is a fine thrash vocalist and can vary his delivery enough to avoid sounding one-note or tedious. He moves from a classic thrash bark to a blackened rasp on a dime, and at times he sounds like he’s having a complete psychotic break. Dominik Marx is an inhuman freak machine on the kit, filling all the dead space with thunder and war. He’s all over his toms and snares at all times, and you can’t miss what he’s doing in the back line because he’s morbidly a beast!

Warfield are the spiritual successor to what the Big Three of Germanic thrash created in the 80s, and they have a sound that’s different enough to stand out from the thrash pack. If the writing were more consistent, this would be a thrash lover’s fever dream. It’s got all the right parts and just needs a slight tune-up. The good stuff is very turbulent and volatile, and that’s half the battle. The other half is brutal wiolence. Well worth an abrasive loudblast.

Rating: 3.0/5.0
DR: NA | Format Reviewed: Fucking Stream
Label: Napalm
Websites: warfieldthrash.com | warfieldthrash.bandcamp.com | instagram.com/warfield.thrash
Releases Worldwide: April 4th, 2025

#2025 #30 #Apr25 #BlackMetal #GermanMetal #Kreator #NapalmRecords #Review #Reviews #Sodom #ThrashMetal #Warfield #WithTheOldBreed

Angry Metal Guy
Industrial Puke – Alive to No Avail Review

By Saunders

Usually, the illustrious Mark Z deals with the vomitous streams flowing through the promo sump. But for the second time for this particular act, I’m taking one for the team. However, the subject is not in the vein of vile underground death or hellraising blackened thrash. Rather, Sweden’s Industrial Puke rip through a nasty collection of crossover hardcore/crust/death metal on second LP, Alive to No Avail. Featuring a chunk of the Rentokiller line-up and charismatic, raw-throated vox of Burst frontman Linus Jägerskog, Industrial Puke pull no punches in their bid to fuse genres and bust heads in one hefty swing. The band’s short and sweet debut, Born into the Twisting Rope, was a solid outing that didn’t break boundaries but executed with oodles of pissed off attitude and breakneck efficiency, resulting in an entertaining listen. Can they capitalize on a promising debut to deliver something more intense and well-rounded on their second opus to match the awesome on paper love of Dismember and Disrupt?

Alive to No Avail treads similar worn territory to its predecessor, while sharpening the points of their sound. Again, the formula skews more heavily towards their hardcore and crust influences. However, refreshingly, the old school Swedeath, thrash, and occasional melodeath influences add spark, heaviness, and versatility to their aggro, frantic attacks. Overall, it’s a more adventurous, fully fleshed album, dripping with spiteful aggression, speedy gallops, punchy riffs, and thumping grooves. Alive to No Avail is every bit as vicious as its predecessor, yet by the same token, everything feels bigger, beefier, tighter and altogether stronger in writing and design. Compact in length like the debut, this time around Industrial Puke have upped the runtime to lengths more closely associated with full-length territory, allowing more time to develop and expand their sound across a near half-hour smackdown.

Immediately, “Daily Chest Pain” goes straight for the throat, nasty belligerent riffs take hold as Jägerskog’s acidic snarls and gang shouted backing vox lend the song a vicious edge. A short, nifty solo rips through the controlled carnage, adding a welcome melodic spark. While boasting a more pronounced death metal influence, the hardcore crust vibes remain the focal point, thus tolerance towards these influences will likely determine the mileage. Integrating their dueling influences into meaty riffs that pack a solid punch, Industrial Puke leverage their stomping hardcore riffs and motifs, with Slayer-esque thrash chops, gnarled Swedeath riffs, and raw Gothenburg throwbacks (“Alive to No Avail”). Whether incorporating seething hardcore meets sludge tones on The Atlas Moth-esque “The Regretful Climb,” ripping through Slayer-indebted thrash with crossover attitude (“Flaccid Provider”), unleashing violently stomping grooves and punchy gang shouts (Biblical Curse’), or embracing the d-beaten Swedeath fury and dueling vox of “Average Dicks,” Alive to No Avail marks a consistently raucous, nasty ride.

Musically, Industrial Puke play fast and tight, demonstrating steady, experienced hands. The influences are broader than the debut, the scope has expanded. However, the raging, jugular ripping directness and amped up speed reign supreme. The death metal influences are slightly more forward, though again the hardcore and crust elements take center stage, generously dosed with old school thrash and snippets of buzzsawing death. As sharp and gnarly as Industrial Puke sound, moments arise where I crave a little more death in the mix. Jägerskog’s vocals are very good, and the recurring gang vocal trade-offs and occasional lower variation lend variety. However, it would be nice to hear more low growls and death vox to complement Jägerskog’s aggro snarl (such as those used to great effect on “Average Dicks”).

Industrial Puke write fast, fun, bruising music, featuring the songwriting smarts and raw aggression to draw in listeners from both hardcore and death metal worlds. Alive to No Avail marks a step forward for Industrial Puke, building from the solid groundwork laid on the debut, to punch out an album of deeper substance, stronger riffs, and tons of brawling aggression and headbangable anthems. Metalheads opposed to hardcore influences or put off by the higher-pitched, strained vocal style of Jägerskog will be unlikely to be swayed. On the flipside, fans of crossover styles and hardcore forward metal with a death crust should find much to enjoy here.

Rating: 3.5/5.0
DR: 7 | Format Reviewed: 320 kbps mp3
Label: Suicide Records
Websites: Bandcamp | Facebook
Releases Worldwide: March 28th, 2025

#2025 #35 #AliveToNoAvail #Burst #crossover #Crust #DeathMetal #Dismember #Disrupt #Hardcore #IndustrialPuke #Rentokiller #Review #Reviews #Slayer #SuicideRecords #SwedishMetal #TheAtlasMoth #ThrashMetal

Angry Metal Guy
Urn – Demon Steel Review

By Mark Z.

As a U.S. government employee, I’ve spent way too much time lately thinking about RIFs and not enough time thinking about riffs. Fortunately, Finland’s Urn is here to change that. Helmed by vocalist, bassist, and former guitarist Jarno Hämäläinen (a.k.a. “Sulphur”), this black/thrash troupe raised hell throughout the 2000s via albums like 666 Megatons and Dawn of the Devastation, both of which blasted with reckless abandon and hit with all the subtlety of a hand grenade. After years of silence following 2008’s Soul Destroyers, the group returned with a revamped lineup and more melodic sound on 2017’s The Burning, resulting in a rousing collection of blackened thrash anthems that was bogged down a bit by songwriting that often felt too cut-and-paste. With 2019’s Iron Will of Power, another revamped lineup helped Sulphur better combine the group’s newfound melodic tendencies and more raucous sensibilities, making for a career-high that sounded like the forgotten little brother of Deströyer 666. On their sixth album, Demon Steel, Urn returns after six years to continue down that same path, mixing the black/thrash of yore with melodies even a folk metal fan could enjoy. But have they taken things too far?

FUKK NO! Rather, Demon Steel is one of those rare late-career albums that shows an extreme band maturing into something more complex, interesting, and catchy, all while still remaining vicious enough to satisfy those poser-crushers in our midst. The basic sound here largely remains the same: frantic and rushing guitars combined with fast and pummeling drums, tossed together with snarled vocals and a sense of epic fury. The soaring melodies that often appeared in the choruses of Iron Will remain; yet here, the addition of a second guitarist has allowed Urn to craft compositions that are more intricate than ever. Early highlight “Are You Friends With Your Demons” proves that it needs neither a question mark nor a decent title to succeed, commanding attention with the layered guitars of its chorus and the supreme melody that appears after that refrain’s second and third iteration.

And fortunately, plenty of the other nine tracks are just as strong. “Heir of Tyrants,” “Burning Blood’s Curse,” and “Ruthless Paranoia” offer perhaps the best example of Urn’s heightened maturity, as each song combines fierce riffing worthy of Aura Noir with sugary lead guitars that could have appeared on a Children of Bodom album. Turning the throttle further into overdrive, “Iron Star” and “Turbulence of Misanthropy” charge forward on bouts of galloping, heavy-as-fuck riffs that sound like Iron Maiden dipped in molten steel, with the latter even offering some melodic black metal moments that recall Dissection. Even the album’s introduction, “Retribution of the Dead,” is a winner, creating an effective buildup with immense chords, pounding drums, and snarls of “Rise!”

Overall, there’s little to complain about here. In addition to delivering plenty of swirling solos, returning guitarist “Axeleratörr” works alongside new axeman “Pestilent Slaughter” to absolutely stuff these 44 minutes with great ideas, resulting in a record that probably contains more unique leads and riffs than the band’s first two albums combined. Sulphur once again sounds venomous and commanding, though perhaps a bit more croaky and aged than before. That doesn’t stop him from pushing himself, however, by embellishing songs like “Wings of Inferno” and “Heir of Tyrants” with powerful clean wails that make things feel extra mighty. The only real downside is that, with every track trying to be a big epic fist-raiser, things get a tad tiresome eventually. The closer, “Predator of Spiritforms,” feels a bit overshadowed by its predecessors, and while the mid-paced stomp of “Wings of Inferno” offers a bit of late-album variety, I’d still love to have just one straight-ahead rager in the second half. Fortunately, the production is great, with a clear, balanced, and powerful sound that emphasizes the crystalline leads while giving the riffs plenty of bite.

It’s been exciting to watch Urn grow from a pretty basic black/thrash band to one of the few older groups left in the style still producing worthwhile music. While I’ll always love the hammering and explosive sound of their early stuff, Demon Steel shows the band crafting songs that are more exciting, memorable, and well-written than anything they’ve done before. The result is a truly fantastic release that’s sure to please everyone from diehard Desaster fans to casual blogreaders just looking for some good fukkin music to distract themselves from all the bullshit out there today. Angry Metal Guy
Tiktaalika – Gods of Pangaea Review

By sentynel

I must admit, after being really impressed last time, my initial reaction here was “oof.” The last was pretty, subtle, layered with hidden details, and referential yet retaining its own originality. This is much more immediate, heavily retro, and honestly, kinda ugly. I am of course talking about the album art. Compare the award-winning cover of Charlie Griffiths’ previous album Tiktaalika to the art on the newly rebranded Tiktaalika’s Gods of Pangaea. Album art is nothing if not an advertisement of the musical contents, so what does a cover from an 80s thrash band with some detailing referencing the previous record’s theming portend?

If you said “Gods of Pangaea will sound like an 80s thrash band with some light prog stylings from the previous record,” congratulations to both you and the artist1. This is explicitly an homage to the melodic end of 80s thrash and proto-thrash. The sound is exemplified by Peace Sells-era Megadeth, with some proggy influences a la Mercyful Fate. The riffs go chugga chugga twiddly twiddly and then there’s an even twiddlier guitar solo. The vocals, from a selection of talented guest vocalists, span melodic cleans, shouty thrash vocals, and some harsher styles.2 If you like that sort of thing, it’s done very well here and this album is for you. Griffiths is clearly having fun and it shows.

If you want to stand out from all the other retro bands, and the historical catalogs of all the bands you’re actually referencing, you need some sort of differentiating factor. Fellow purveyors of retro-styled tripe The Night Flight Orchestra have got away with it for so many albums through a mixture of exuberance, stellar songwriting, and developing an identity despite the references. On Gods of Pangaea, the mixture of vocalists works against Tiktaalika, making it difficult to claim any sort of identity. The result feels like a collection of covers of 80s B-sides nobody quite remembers. And while the songs are good, they’re not quite that good. In particular, the guitars dissolve into a primordial soup of thrash genre conventions. It colors so consistently within the lines it’s hard to pick standout riffs or even identify the songs from the guitar parts. The exception is highlight “The Forbidden Zone,” with a slower tempo and more of a driving, insistent feel to the riffs.

I mentioned last time that Griffiths is a really good vocal writer/director, and that’s still true here… to a point. The thrash influences have led to some of the singers (particularly Daniël de Jongh) aping Dave Mustaine’s style (“Tyrannicide”, “Give Up the Ghost”), and, look, I like Megadeth, but not for the vocals. When it’s good, though (“The Forbidden Zone,” “Mesozoic Mantras,” both with Vladimir Lalić), there are some excellent choruses. “Fault Lines” (with Rody Walker) is an odd example where, though his mixed and harsh vocals are technically very good, the majority of the song falls a bit flat… but the “suddenly I stand on hallowed ground, and I am waiting for the divine”3 chorus is by far the catchiest thing on the entire album.

Gods of Pangaea successfully does what it sets out to do. It sounds like Megadeth. The songs are good, and occasionally great. There are intensely catchy choruses. It sounds like the band are having fun. It’s an enjoyable listen; I just find it very hard to get excited about something so nakedly backward-looking. The thrash genre conventions in the guitar writing leave me unable to pick any favorite guitar moments, and that’s not a great look for a guitarist’s side project. It’s not rethrash in its most cliched form – there’s more melody and songcraft here than that – but it’s far closer than I’d like.

Rating: Mixed
DR: 6 | Format Reviewed: 320 kb/s mp3
Label: Inside Out Music
Websites: insideoutmusic.bandcamp.com | facebook.com/charlie.griffiths.guitarist
Releases Worldwide: March 14th, 2025

#25 #2025 #BritishMetal #CharlieGriffiths #GodsOfPangaea #InsideOutMusic #Mar25 #Megadeth #MercyfulFate #ProgressiveMetal #Review #Reviews #ThrashMetal #Tiktaalika

Angry Metal Guy
SpiritWorld – Helldorado Review

By Dear Hollow

SpiritWorld’s lone appearance ’round these here parts, like any good vigilante, is an entry in the 2022 AOTY list of then-n00b, now gone-but-never-unforgotten ItchyMenace for sophomore album Deathwestern. But guess what? There’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s mad as hell. So mad, he’ll riff you at sundown in front of the town hall at high noon, so say “yeehaw” and “howdy, pardner,” because that piano’s gon’ stop at the saloon because there’s a fire at the watering hole.1 Out in the desert, there’s a snake with your boot’s name on it and a bullet with your name on it too. So tread lightly, cuz there’s a big black train named SpiritWorld heading straight for your ass – to take you to Helldorado.

All Wild West stereotypes and John Wayne-isms aside, Vegas natives SpiritWorld have been going with the “deathwestern” trope for three albums now. Hardcore punk, thrash, death metal, and country have a hand on their revolver in this five-man shootout, sometimes all at once in an O.K. Corral massacre, sometimes in doses like a hefty shot of laudanum afterwards. Helldorado riffs first and foremost, with kickass and cutthroat Slayer shreds and D.R.I.-inspired hardcore attitude kicking in the saloon door with a steel-toed boot, while a spittoon of experimentalisms are like gooey tobacco made of black metal and jazz. Ultimately, in spite of consistency issues and one-note beatdowns, thanks to SpiritWorld’s utterly batshit ideas and straightforward viciousness, Helldorado is one mighty hell of a good time.

What keeps me coming back to Helldorado is the riffs, SpiritWorld completely surging with adrenaline. Crossover thrash a la D.R.I. gets the riffs going, with heftily constructed beatdowns of speedy Slayer leads (“No Vacancy in Heaven,” “Western Stars & the Apocalypse,” “Waiting on the Reaper”), while more western-themed mid-tempo jaunts laced with gang vocals and meaty breakdowns bring the anvil of brainless mayhem (“Abilene Grime,” “Stigmata Scars”). Compared to its predecessor, Helldorado’s guitar tone is much more nimble, allowing it a cutthroat viciousness and weighted beatdown in equal measure. Vocalist Stu Folsom somehow injects a cowboy accent into his blend of Henry Rollins yells and James Hetfield sneers, always annunciating the lyrics for hardcore callouts.2 Bluesy country-western scales are built into every moment, manifesting in delicious leads, technical shreds, all alongside wailing heavy metal solos that seem to hit at just the right moments – culminating into something that feels a tad like a crossover Pantera. It’s a kick to the groin, and you’ll love every bit of it.

While the previous outing Deathwestern grew old with its overreliance on the chuggy riff, Helldorado changes things up considerably. While the majority of the album only features wild west-sounding melodies, some tracks throw off this structure like a rattlesnake in the boot – it serves to break the monotony of SpiritWorld’s omni-riffage. You’ll first notice the softer country twang that pervades some of the album’s midsection, but its experimental vibes draws comparisons to Kirin J. Callinan’s “Big Enough” (yes, the screaming cowboy song),3 – “Bird Song of Death” and closer “Annihilism” feature rough thrash vocals atop Jason Aldean-esque plucking in an odd concoction, while the whispery vocals and sidewinding sax solo in “Prayer Lips” are sure to turn some heads. “Oblivion” is a curious track, as its ridiculously chunky riffage builds up to a feature of Blackbraid’s Sgah’gahsowáh shrieking atop a thrash riff, later followed up by a punky solo by Rise Against’s Zach Blair. Kreator/Sinsaenum guitarist Frédéric Leclercq contributes a rip-roaring solo to “Stigmata Scars.”

Helldorado is just fun as hell. SpiritWorld’s riffage is front-and-center, but you’ll also be singin’ these songs into the moonlight with a clunky guitar and a cup o’ cowboy coffee, pardner.4 With hell-raisin vocals, kickass riffs, and just enough experimental elements to keep you guessing (or scratching your head), it blows its predecessors out of the watering hole. Sure, in spite of the frivolities, SpiritWorld remains a one-trick pony – but Helldorado ensures they can ride that pony into the sunset.

Rating: 3.0/5.0
DR: 4 | Format Reviewed: 320 kb/s mp3
Label: Century Media Records
Websites: spiritworldprophet.bandcamp.com | spiritworldprophet.com
Releases Worldwide: March 21st, 2025

#2025 #30 #AmericanMetal #BlackFlag #Blackbraid #CenturyMediaRecords #ColdChisel #DRI_ #GrooveMetal #Hardcore #HeavyMetal #Helldorado #JasonAldean #KirinJCallahan #Kreator #Mar25 #Metallica #Pantera #Review #Reviews #RiseAgainst #Sinsaenum #Slayer #SpiritWorld #ThrashMetal

Angry Metal Guy
Vokodlok – The Egregious Being Review

By Kenstrosity

Hailing from Romania and dealing in Transylvanian mythology, Vokodlok began life as a raw black metal band. Their debut, Mass Murder Genesis, represented that genre in all its sonic roughness, featuring guitar tones worthy only of magnetic tape, a bona fide trash can lid snare, and croaking rasps galore. Shortly after that debut dropped, Vokodlok called it quits until reforming in 2018 with a slightly restructured lineup. But that’s not the only thing that’s transformed since their rebirth. What alchemic concoctions lay in store for this latest incarnation of Vokodlok? Only this sponge can tell, as I dive deep into sophomore outing The Egregious Being.

What once was true blue raw black is now but a ghost. 2025 sees Vokodlok exploring a starkly different sound, sharing much more in kind with death and thrash metal, although still dusted in cold soot. In the spirit of this metamorphosis, The Egregious Being hones in on fast-paced, chunky riffs and thrashy rhythms. Vokodlok’s production shifted to reflect this updated style, warming up considerably—certainly enough to defrost the ice draping from those trem-heavy leads of olde and allow the hellish flame of death to bloom anew. Yet, much of this material retains a level of rawness that belies Vokodlok’s shapeshifting instincts, permitting listeners a window into these Romanians’ past selves and highlighting significant character development in not just their sound but also their songwriting.

This character development showcases Vokodlok’s versatility as musicians while still exhibiting a distinct voice that sets them apart from other bands in this space. Strong cuts such as “The Human,” “Death Terror,” “Bestiarium,” and “jagh ‘lw vlpoQ” explore that voice, but also apply tasteful notes of Death, Úlfúð, Eximperitus, Immolation, and Cell to ground listeners on familiar territory. Whether that influence takes the form of a swaggering lean (“jagh ‘lw vlpoQ”), a ripping classic death metal solo (“Death Terror”), riffs that straddle the fence between styles (“The Human”), or a multifaceted songwriting structure forged from the annals of black, death, and thrash metal combined (“Warzone,” “Bestiarium,” “Denizen”), The Egregious Being thrives on adapting touchstones of multiple disciplines in synchronized unity with their own creativity. More melodic cuts like “The Faces Within” further enliven the experience in its light-footed agility through more exuberant musicality, but it’s never so jubilant or expressive as to create distance between that and their darker, moodier pieces (“The Monster,” “Disdain”).

If there was one aspect of Vokodlok’s songwriting that pulls the material down, it’s their penchant for repetition and ungentle transitions. Blunt force constitutes the majority of these songs’ movements between themes, riffs, and verses. Some tracks, like “The Faces Within” and “Death Terror,” smooth these out a bit more and thereby create fluidity without compromising extremity. However, abrupt and, at times, jarring moments create an unpleasant roughness to this ride that never threaten enjoyment, but sometimes immersion (“Denizen”). Of course, this isn’t helped by the odd production, personified by a weird mix of warm, modern, and murky tones. Not altogether disruptive or bothersome, a handful of motifs across the record seem notably simplistic or overly repetitive in relation to others. While this in and of itself doesn’t warrant much concern, considering Vokodlok’s high level of quality across the board, it creates a disconnect from more intricately constructed or richly layered compositions. In those instances where a single track represents both sides of this dichotomy, any such rift between one moment and another poses the greatest threat to my enjoyment (“Disdain”).

Overall, The Egregious Being is a pleasant and quite unexpected surprise. Where I had every reason to anticipate something raw, ragged, and sloppy (on purpose), I instead received something fresh, well-developed, and mature. The Egregious Being may not be a perfect record, but it does illustrate a willingness to evolve and grow into something more unique, more substantial, and altogether more engaging. If this is just the beginning for Vokodlok, then the future is bright!

Rating: Very Good
DR: 7 | Format Reviewed: 320 kb/s mp3
Label: Self Release
Websites: vokodlok.bandcamp.com | facebook.com/VokodloK-1429971080417504
Releases Worldwide: March 14th, 2025

#2025 #35 #BlackMetal #Cell #Death #DeathMetal #Eximperitus #Immolation #Mar25 #Review #Reviews #RomanianMetal #SelfRelease #TheEgregiousBeing #ThrashMetal #Úlfúð #Vokodlok

Angry Metal Guy
Warbringer – Wrath and Ruin Review

By Steel Druhm

Warbringer are one of the few re-thrash acts of the aughts to have genuine staying power, starting life in 2008 and still going some 17 years on. As with any modern thrash act, however, their output has been somewhat inconsistent. Albums like IV: Empires Collapse and 2020s Weapons of Tomorrow were enjoyable slabs of speed; other albums had issues that held them back to one degree or another. In truth, though I highly rated Weapons of Tomorrow when it dropped, I don’t go back to it all that much, and it didn’t even end up on my Top Ten(ish) for 2020. Overrating may have happened, but it’s a fun thrash platter nonetheless. I hoped for more of the same on 7th album, Wrath and Ruin. With the same lineup in place, the band keeps things fast and loud but take a number of chances, stretching their wings to tackle a few epic and more proggy styles along the way. Whether that’s what you want in a thrash album is a matter of personal taste, so let me tell you about mine.

Things open with one of these newfangled epic cuts, “The Sword and the Cross,” and it’s an interesting blend of their classic thrash sound and something approaching trve metal with blackened elements tossed in the cauldron for added might and mayhem. It’s aggressive and angry with some high flying guitar pyrotecnics giving it an elevated sense of scope and grandeur. John Kevill chews on the scenery throughout, delivering a commanding vocal performance full of macho machismo, and though the song runs a touch long at 6 minutes, it’s a mostly successful experiment. “Through a Glass, Darkly” takes the epic experiment even further, going for straight-up Primordial worship and somehow makes it work for them. This one sounds like a lost track from To the Nameless Dead, and that’s a compliment I didn’t expect to be offering up here. The standout moment, however, comes on the adventurous “Cage of Air,” where Warbringer attempts to wedge Opethian vibes into their thrash template. Over the song’s nearly 7 minutes, the band marries thrash and black elements and plays with varying moods and textures in a way you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a bunch of unwashed thrash fiends. It’s quite a revelation that it comes out as interesting as it does.

Oddly enough, it’s the straight-up thrashers that let the band down this time. Both “A Better World” and “Neuromancer” feel underwhelming and cut-and-paste. They aren’t terrible tracks, but they don’t really engage my attention in a meaningful way. “The Jackhammer” is a bit better with fun little vinettes and some satisfying riffs, but it too is less that essential. Of the thrash selections, “Strike from the Sky” is the clear standout, offering an adrenaline-soaked rip ride full of nasty riffs and screaming vocals. Things wind out with “The Last of My Kind,” which tries to marry their thrash foundation with the newly ambitious writing, and it works up to a point before being bogged down by too much added padding and losing the plot. The overall package delivered on Wrath and Ruin is an inconsistent and erratic one. It sounds like a band trying to redefine themselves and break through into a new sound, and they’re only partially successful at getting there. At 40 minutes, the album isn’t too long, but the presence of multiple 6-plus minute tracks with varying degrees of bloat makes the whole feel fatter than it is.

Guitarists Adam Carroll and Chase Becker push themselves to meet the expanded scope of the material, and they do a solid job. They deliver some compelling moments on cuts like Through a Glass, Darkly” and “Cage of Air” and show themselves to be quite versatile. However, their thrash riffs and harmonies feel a bit underbaked this time out. John Kevill also does his best to push his vocals into new places to meet the moment of the bigger, broader material. Though he’s a somewhat limited vocalist, he does enough to sell the bigger set pieces, even approximating Primordial’s A.A. Nemtheanga at times. Warbringer always had talent and ability, but the writing here is too inconsistent and going in too many directions to fully gel and click.

Perhaps this is Warbringer’s transition into a new style of sorts, and if so, it’s not entirely unsuccessful. There are some interesting moments here and a few solid tracks to sink your teeth into. It just doesn’t come together as a cohesive whole for me, and I don’t see this as an album I’ll be returning to much in the future when I need a dose of speed and “Fuck You” attitude. You can’t win all the wars you bring, though.

Rating: 2.5/5.0
DR: NA | Format Reviewed: Fucking Stream
Label: Napalm
Websites: warbringermusic.com | warbringer.bandcamp.com | facebook.com/warbringermusic
Releases Worldwide: March 14th, 2025

#25 #2025 #AmericanMetal #DeathAngel #Forbidden #Mar25 #NapalmRecords #Review #Reviews #ThrashMetal #Warbringer #WrathAndRuin
