It's dance but a bit dark, with definite dystopian vibes and some implied horror from the material and the hacked satellite feeds. There is beauty in the darkness and you have to acknowledge otherism to pummel it. There shall also be some lighter #synthpop fare, for the people.

„Code“ ist das achte Studioalbum von Cabaret Voltaire, einer sehr einflussreichen britischen Band. Die deutsche Wikipedia listet Depeche Mode, New Order, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Front 242 und Bauhaus auf, deren Mitglieder Cabaret Voltaire als Inspiration bezeichnet haben. Sie gelten als Pioniere und Wegbereiter des Industrial, Synth-Pop, EBM, House und Techno. Schon 1973 begannen Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk und Chris Watson, elektronische Musik zu machen, ihr erstes Album veröffentlichten sie 1979.

Auf „Code“ haben sich Cabaret Voltaire, mittlerweile nur noch aus Kirk, Mallinder und Gastmusikern bestehend, soweit entwickelt, dass vor allem die Funk-Gitarre ins Ohr sticht. Die Synthesizer erinnern stellenweise an Front 242 oder Kraftwerk, der Gesang an Trent Reznor, wobei das erste Nine Inch Nails-Album erst zwei Jahre später erschien. Sie haben den experimentellen Sound der frühen Jahre hinter sich gelassen und sich dem Mainstream zugewandt. „Code“ war auch ihr erstes Album bei einem Majorlabel (EMI), konnte sich jedoch nicht ind den Charts platzieren und auch die beiden Singleauskopplungen „Don’t Argue“ und „Here To Go“ landeten nur auf hinteren Plätzen. Das liegt wohl daran, dass „Code“ immer noch nicht eingängig genug ist.

Cabaret Voltaire ist ein wichtiger Mosaikstein in der Musikgeschichte, wie erwähnt haben sich viele Industrial- und Post-Punk-Bands von ihrem frühen Schaffen inspirieren lassen, sogar Einstürzende Neubauten und Ministry können noch ergänzt werden.
