Florida’s health department threatened #criminal #charges for television stations that run a political ad calling for the repeal of the state’s six-week abortion ban,
one of the nation’s strictest.
At least two stations received cease-and-desist letters Thursday
written by John Wilson, general counsel from the Florida Department of Health, 
demanding they pull the advertisement.
The health department and office of Florida Gov. #Ron #DeSantis (R) did not respond to requests for comment.
Wilson wrote that running the 30-second spot was a violation of Florida’s “#sanitary #nuisance” law, 
which is commonly used to charge people with overflowing septic tanks or unclean slaughterhouses.
He ordered the stations to remove the ads within 24 hours or open themselves up to a second-degree misdemeanor charge,
which in Florida carries a sentence of imprisonment up to 60 days and a fine up to $500.
In the ad, Caroline Williams describes how

Edgar Uihlein Jr.’s second child, #Dick, born in 1945, grew up in the wealthy Chicago suburb of Lake Bluff and got the same sort of blue-blood education

Amid the social upheavals of the ’60s, #Dick #Uihlein didn’t waver:
He married Liz before graduating from college in 1967,
joined the family business and immersed himself in conservative politics.
He worked on the 1969 Illinois congressional campaign of Phil Crane, who won a crowded Republican primary in an upset on a hardline anti-tax and anti-communist platform.
In one of the only interviews he’s ever given, Dick Uihlein told National Review in 2018 that he got his politics from his father,
who often went by Ed.
At the family breakfast table growing up, Uihlein recalled,
“My father would talk about the importance of capitalism and the evils of socialism.”
Dick said that same year that
“my father shared many of the same values that I have, conservative values.”
Dick and Liz Uihlein continue to revere Edgar Jr., who died in 2005.
Dick Uihlein named the family foundation after his father, and it now sends tens of millions of dollars to right-wing institutions.

was a long tribute to the “wise” Edgar Uihlein Jr.
“Father Uihlein, the head of the family, had a towering presence, and we respected his values,” wrote Liz Uihlein under a picture of her husband and father-in-law,
recalling “frequent dinners at his house, where business, issues of the day, fishing muskies and, always, politics were discussed.”
She ended on a note of nostalgia tinged with bitterness:
“Living your life and raising your kids were easier in an easier time.
There was no legalized marijuana, defund the police or social media.
We, like so many families, were raised with a sharp moral compass.
The rules were the rules, but it was OK.”
The Uihleins’ political giving reflects these longings for a bygone era.

More recently, in his home state of Illinois, Uihlein has spent more than $50 million to back the Republican gubernatorial candidate #Darren #Bailey, who has drawn criticism for saying the #Holocaust “doesn’t even compare” to the toll of abortions and for accusing Democrats of “putting #perversion into our schools” for adopting a sex ed bill that includes information about gender identity and same-sex couples.
The Uihleins were huge beneficiaries of a tax provision promoted by Sen. #Ron #Johnson, R-Wisc., that was included in the Trump tax overhaul and are continuing to support the Wisconsin senator and fund attack ads against his opponent.
For all the Uihleins’ dismay at the disorder they see consuming the country, there is one domain where they can exert near total control.
Former employees of Uline told ProPublica the couple’s traditionalist politics govern the smallest details of how the company is run.
For new staffers, it begins with the #dress #code in the employee handbook:
Women are not permitted to wear pants except as part of a pantsuit or on Fridays;
hose or stockings must be worn except during the warmer months;
dresses “that are too short” and corduroy of any kind are strictly prohibited.
The handbook defines “tardy” as one minute past an employee’s scheduled start time.
Just four personal items are allowed on employees’ desks,
with maximum dimensions of 5 inches by 7 inches.
One former staffer at Uline’s headquarters recalled a coworker who was forced to remove several drawings done by his young child.
“Liz would walk up and down the aisles, and if your desk looked off, you’d be written up,” he recalled.

The director of the 2020 movie based on Ohio Sen. JD Vance’s (R) book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” said that he won’t be casting a vote for former President Trump despite Vance being his running mate in a video posted Saturday.
“There’s no version of me voting for Donald Trump to be president again, whoever the vice president was,” #Ron #Howard said in a video from Variety.
Howard had previously said in 2022 that he was “surprised by some of the positions [Vance has] taken and statements he’s made.”

The amendment would overturn Florida’s current six-week abortion ban.
Petition organizers collected about 100,000 more signatures than they needed, surpassing the 900,000 that are required by the state and ensuring that their policy would be on the ballot.
Now the Department of State’s spokesperson Ryan Ash claims that his agency has “uncovered evidence of illegal conduct with fraudulent petitions.”
Supervisors in Hillsborough, Orange, Palm Beach, Osceola, Alachua, and Broward counties have been requested to gather around 36,000 signatures for state review, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
One supervisor with 16 years of experience told the Times that the state’s request was entirely unprecedented.
Not only had the state requested signatures that had already been verified, but they did so for a validated petition, not a rejected petition, which are typically the basis of fraud investigations.

It was a deeply weird affair. With Trump hovering watchfully over Johnson, the House Speaker said that in campaigning, he’s discovered that people across the country just happen to be thoroughly obsessed with precisely the same thing that preoccupies Trump.
“Everywhere we go, one of the first questions that people ask about is this issue of #election #integrity,” Johnson said.
The GOP remains as committed as ever to their disturbing post-insurrection denial path.
At least a dozen Republican incumbents or prominent candidates in competitive races are tainted with #election #denialism, some of it extremely serious or even #deranged.
These include representatives like #Scott #Perry of Pennsylvania, who was extensively involved in Trump’s coup, #Anna #Paulina #Luna of Florida, who co-wrote a children’s book falsely depicting the 2020 election as stolen, and #Derrick #Van #Orden of Wisconsin, who attended the Capitol rally on January 6.
Meanwhile, GOP Representatives #Mike #Garcia and #Ken #Calvert of California, and #David #Schweikert of Arizona, all voted not to certify Biden’s electors.
Representative #Jen #Kiggans of Virginia repeatedly fed doubts about the 2020 outcome.
Democrats view all these as key targets.

That’s only a partial list.
Could this factor help tip the balance of the House? It’s not all that far-fetched a possibility.
Dave Wasserman, senior editor and elections analyst at Cook Political Report, suggests keeping an eye on the GOP primary underway in the district of Representative #Lauren #Boebert (who is running in another district).
That pits wild-eyed election denier #Ron #Hanks against a saner opponent.
If Hanks wins, Democrats have a “very good chance” of winning Boebert’s seat, Wasserman says.
The upshot? As Wasserman notes, election denialism might end up mattering in only a limited number of races.
But, he adds, “the margin in the House is so close right now that even things like that could affect the outcome.”

In sworn testimony before Congress, Lev #Parnas, a former Trump henchman, says the senator from Wisconsin was “our guy in the Senate.”
On Wednesday, Lev Parnas, the Ukrainian businessman who worked closely with former New York mayor Rudy #Giuliani and other Trump associates to smear Biden in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election, and who eventually went to #prison for his wrongdoing, said in testimony before the House Oversight Committee, 
“The American people have been lied to, by Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and various individuals in government and media positions, all of whom worked to create a web of falsehood. They did this purely to serve their own interests, knowing that it would undermine the strength of our nation.”
In damning testimony at the hearing, which House Republicans had organized in a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt to develop their Ukraine-related argument for impeaching Biden, Parnas explained,
The only information ever pushed about the Bidens and Ukraine has come from Russia and Russian agents, which everyone sitting here today knows.
FBI informant Alexander #Smirnov has admitted to getting all his so-called intelligence on the Bidens from Russia.
According to their own statements, federal prosecutors found him guilty of “actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections.”
And as recently as November 2023, a number of Ukrainian politicians sympathetic to Russia were implicated as having helped funnel false information about the Bidens to Giuliani while also being connected to a Russian foreign influence network.
During more than a year of jetting around Europe, as part of what he described as a Giuliani-led effort to dig up dirt on Biden before the 2020 election, Parnas said,
I found precisely zero proof of the Bidens’ criminality.
Instead, what I learned in that timeframe was the true nature of the conspiracy that the Kremlin was forcing through Russian, Ukrainian, American, and other channels to interfere in our elections.
Ultimately this was meant to benefit Trump’s reelection, which would in turn benefit Vladimir #Putin.
Which brings us back to #Ron #Johnson.
After the senator dismissed his briefing from the FBI, Johnson moved to release a report that The New York Times described as “little more than a rehashing six weeks before Election Day of unproven allegations that echo an active Russian #disinformation campaign and have been pushed by Mr. Trump.”
Where was Johnson getting his material?
Parnas told the House Committee on Wednesday that Giuliani and his allies convened 
“regular strategy meetings at BLT Steak in Washington, D.C.,”
and “I was told in that setting that Senator Ron Johnson would be ‘our guy in the Senate,’ responsible for pushing all the information we were getting. But he would actually end up spreading unverified conspiracy theories instead.”
“Every person integral to this shadow diplomacy knew that the Biden corruption rumors were baseless,” Parnas testified.
Then-Congressman #Devin #Nunes, Senator #Ron #Johnson, and many other individuals understood that they were pushing a false narrative. The same goes for #John #Solomon, #Sean #Hannity, and media personnel, particularly at #Fox #News, who used that narrative to manipulate the public ahead of the 2020 election.
They are still doing this today, as we approach the 2024 election.
After Parnas testified, US Representative Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) followed up on the allegation regarding Johnson.
Referencing the statement that the Wisconsinite would be the group’s “‘guy in the Senate’ to push all the information,” Frost asked,
“What did you mean by that?”
“Senator Ron Johnson was our guy in the Senate,” replied Parnas.
“It was told to me that, when we pushed the information, he was going to push it in the halls of Congress.”
Frost continued, “So when the media was getting skeptical about pushing disinformation
—after they’ve proven it wrong time and time again
—the plan was to have a US senator, Ron Johnson, to push that information even further?”
“Correct,” said Parnas, “because we had Congressman Nunes already doing it, so Senator Ron Johnson jumped on board.”
