Couple of #VHS Tapes - both snapped** No footage loss on one, remarkably

#ReelToReel Audio from the early 70s & a #Cassette from the 90s

Over the past two days, I've been experimenting with recording multiple tracks out to the AKAI reel to reel and simultaneously recording the result from tape back to a new stereo track in the computer.

Works great. All I'm finding I need to do is re EQ slightly, as the deck's frequency response is such that the highs are bumped up a bit, which I don't want. There's also a nice bump in the low's, but I like that.

This all works cuz the play head comes after the record head. So as soon as the audio is recorded it heads back via the play head to the computer.

Two years ago, I was pulling out the few remaining wisps of hair I had - respooling tape, fixing kit, swearing - a lot.

Lining up the next round now… must be bonkers

I bought a basically unlabeled 10" NAB Ampex 345 Master Studio reel-to-reel tape about 7-8 years ago, from a recycling center in Toronto.
I finally had it professionally tape-baked and transferred, and will pour over what the heck is on it; most likely posting it to archive.org.

I captured one of the Signs Of The Zodiac releases, Aries, from a reel-to-reel 7.5 IPS release. Unfortunately this capture is both flawed and incomplete, however the quality is very nice despite the flaws.

This is spoken word album about the Aries zodiac sign, with background electronic music by Mort Garson.

Got this beast back from being serviced. Tested the transport, and will be testing the recording and playback tomorrow. Here’s a quick list of what was done:

-new counter belt
-new pinch roller
-16 new transistors in the preamp stage
-level and bias alignment to ATR MDS-36 tape.
-burnished relay contacts and verified proper operation in both directions.
-test run 12 hours in all modes.

Flat to 20Khz at 7 ½ IPS and about 18Khz at 3 ¾.
