In April 2024, more than 9 million residents of Bogotá, Colombia’s capital city, were told to #collect #rainwater
– if the city was lucky enough to experience a storm❗
Fed by the Guatiquía River, the Chingaza reservoir system, which supplies the area with 70% of its water, had reached critically low levels.
To make what was left stretch through a dry spell with no clear end in sight, authorities divided the city into nine zones.
💥Every day, one of the zones would go dry for 24 hours.
No toilet would flush.
No glass of water would be filled from the tap.
Dishes would have to go unwashed.
Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galan told residents they should
🔥be prepared to live with the water restrictions for a year.
“The call is to take care of every drop of water,” the mayor’s office said, according to CBS News.
⚠️ A month later, 2,000 miles away in Mexico, the Cutzamala system of reservoirs reached historic lows.
The water reserves supply a substantial portion of water to #Mexico #City’s 22 million residents, who faced mandatory rationing.
🆘 Bogotá and Mexico City’s stories mirror those of cities across the globe.
The amount of water stored in lakes worldwide has drastically and steadily decreased since 1992, according to a 2023 study published in the prestigious research journal Science.
During those 30 years, freshwater lakes collectively lost an average of 600 cubic kilometers of water storage annually
– 17 times the volume of Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.

‘This is #Chernobyl’: #Texas ranchers say ‘forever chemicals’ in waste-based fertilizers ruined their land

Story by Rebecca Lopez
April 28, 2024

"Ranchers here say their cattle, fish and horses are dying and getting sick because of a fertilizer spread on nearby farmland.

"The fertilizer is made from treated human waste from the city of Fort Worth.

"The company that makes the fertilizer says its products meet government standards.

"County officials have launched a criminal investigation, and ranchers are suing, saying runoff from the fertilizer has made their land useless."

[this was fascinating to read, especially as I have a deep interest in Sicily’s fascinating history including back to neolithic, cultural components & interactions, geology, food and drink (!), geographic setting, geomorphology, archaeology and so much more – and I want to live in the old part of Ragusa one day…]

This is a large & lavishly illustrated PDF volume detailing the #Slovakian “Landscape Revitalization and Integrated #River Basin Management Program", in Slovakian & English .
The negative consequences of increased drainage of #rainwater is a shortage of moisture in #soil, reduction of the organic content of (& reduction of its capability to retain #water & #fertility), #erosion, #desertification, on one hand, and #floods on the other, a drop in underground water level, etc. Last but not least, the increased drainage of rainwater does not let enough water evaporate in the landscape & cool it down."

#RedFoxes outside my backyard fence this morning, A belated #SilentSunday on a Monday morning.

"The Three Mouse-keteers" are happily playing and catching #FieldMice. Last year, we only saw two #Foxes at a time, and I haven't seen any for a while now. Glad to see the local pest control patrol is still on the job.

Also happy to see them playing like happy puppies. They know they're safe and welcome in our neighborhood.

(Location: #AuroraIllinois USA, near #Chicago, population >200K. The open, mowed-grass area is officially for excessive #rainwater run-off, but is mostly used for kids & animals to run around & play.)
