#Signal adoption is really going well in the #Netherlands, these last few months! Found this lying on the coffee table in a church, yesterday—instructions on how to install Signal for the parishioners. Every day I get notifications for more contacts who've joined.

Getting my friends off #Meta and on the #Fediverse is going... less well. But I try not to let perfect be the enemy of good.

How do we get the #musicians to join the #Fediverse? I've tried to convince my colleagues to join #Pixelfed or #Mastodon, but haven't had much success. It is a community that can be surprisingly reluctant to embrace something different, digitally. (Also see: Apple products.)

They can also be quite ethically conscious people, so I've tried to approach it from that angle, but... Is there a succinct list of convincing arguments anywhere to help with these things?

TIL that on #Meta platforms now one can write terrible, offensive slurs against LGBTQIA+ folks and immigrants… with zero repercussions. But the second one mentions a #Fediverse project like #Pixelfed, the post is automatically removed.

Meta “moderation” policies in 2025: racism, xenophobia, transphobia, homophobia and sexism are allowed; mention of competition is strictly forbidden.

Having The Chat™ with my mom today (about leaving WhatsApp):

*It's OK I don't really care. I'm an old woman who has nothing to hide. I say nothing sensitive.
-Mum, you talk to me.
*Yes.
-And I'm currently employed as an environmental activist, right?
*Yes.
-So everytime you ask "How's work?" that's now a sensitive and potentially targeted communication.
*Ohhhh.

She got it and is on board now.
The rest of the family might be a tougher ask.

2007 - get forced to leave #LiveJournal and join #Fecesbook because all my friends already did

2014 - delete 7 years worth of posts. Took me MONTHS

2016, 2018, 2021 - quit, deactivating in 2021 so I could keep messanger which I stopped using anyways. Haven't gone back

2025 - bye bye fuckbook
