Half a million oysters to be introduced to Humber estuary in restoration plan

Globally, at least 85% of oyster habitat has been lost.
In Yorkshire it is even worse.

A map made in 1883 showed #oyster #beds skirting the British Isles with a thick belt in the Channel -- but now in Europe only an estimated 1% of native flat oysters remain.

They were a cheap and easy food source going back at least as far as Roman times, indicated by the number of shells found in archaeological digs, with lots of Victorian writing mentioning the ubiquity of the bivalve.

“Thinking about this history really ties people to the conservation,” said Kieran McCloskey, the marine restoration manager at Wilder Humber,
adding that getting people to care about oysters was part of the challenge of restoration.

Greetings friends! From #DasInKobe back this evening at the #oyster place down the street from our apt. Made a weekday reservation to get more oysters. Feeling like I hit some kind of lottery in life (I did), as I sit with my family in our booth.

Our waitress spoke English just fine helping us as we navigated the menu via Google translate. She was the only one there, besides the only other person at the kitchen + behind the bar counter prepping the food.

There's Mexican style #oyster on menu - explains the Achiote packet in decor - the other, um, risque, NSFW Indian art next to it just part of the quirk I guess [it was beside, slightly behind our table]

I like to see how other people's art goes from concept to finished product, so here's how my Douglas squirrel shell was made.

It started with a photo of the oyster shell, on which I made a sketch of my design. I used the grid method to transfer the drawing onto the shell (I erased the grid from the shell, afterward).

After that, it was a matter of layers of paint, and correcting a too-long front paw.

I can't decide if this painted shell turned out interesting, or a dismal disappointment. It's supposed to be a tide pool with anemones, urchins, starfish, and barnacles, but... I was too excited by the subject matter of "tide pool" (I love tide pools), and didn't give enough thought to design.

Next time, I'll focus on just one creature and perhaps some bladderwrack.

I find that when a painting has gone wrong, it almost always went wrong in the initial design phase. I'm always sorry when I "wing it" instead of thoroughly working through questions on an initial sketch. I sometimes wish I could be more free-flowing in my approach, but, well, that's just not who I am.

We examined the capacity of intergenerational exposure to mitigate the adverse effects of elevated pCO2 on Eastern #oyster (Crassostrea virginica) early larval shell growth, shell morphology, and survival. We found evidence of transgenerational #plasticity in early larval shell growth and morphology, but not in survival, in response to the parental pCO2 exposure. #OceanAcidification #MarineScience aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.c
