Getting through this era of collapse with anything human left intact

The discussions on sovereignty at #NGIForum2025 make me wonder: what year are we in? It’s as if we’re rebooting grassroots conversations we’ve had for decades – but without the mess, memory, or movement that gave them meaning in the first place.

A breath of clarity came from @renchap, who said it plainly:

We need to focus our efforts on funding and supporting public value network infrastructure… THAT CANNOT BE BOUGHT. 💪

Absolutely. If that idea resonates with you, try starting […]

🚀 NGI Forum Day 2 is underway
With the same #enthusiasm!
Highlights from the opening talks:

🗣️ @StefanVoigt
Let’s build a public, transparent web search infrastructure like Galileo or Copernicus.

🗣️ @MichaelGranitzer
Search influences behaviour is crucial 20–80%. It's core to LLMs and AI.

Let’s treat #OpenWebSearch as a base public service, built on EU HPC centres.

In the #NGIForum panel discussion that just ended some of these points were specifically mentioned. That a big gap exists. Especially Michiel Leenaars of @nlnet addressed the human factor to applause of the audience.

The "commons" we speak about on the fediverse involves people who cocreate together.

The "digital commons" I see in EU Horizons refers to goods. It's a business-driven OSS-based goods market.

The people commons is vital for change. Real innovation.

#NGIFORUM2025 is timidly touching sense hamishcampbell.com/ngiforum202 We are at risk of simply recreating their culture in softer tones. Let’s not do that. Let’s take a breath and reflect on what we’re actually building, it’s not a rhetorical question. This is not abstract.

"There are many people who want to build on digitally autonomous infrastructure, but there is nowhere for them to go to."

"We need to enable the people to govern the internet, by giving them agency - we need to teach them to *open source*"

So. Much. Yes. #ngiforum2025 #ngiforum25 #ngiforum

We’re at the NGI Forum in Brussels today!

Ludovic Dubost, our CEO, is taking part in the Impact Stories Roundtable to talk about what it really means to build open-source tools that prioritize ethics, privacy, and user control.

From CryptPad to WAISE, we’re tackling big challenges with a strong belief in digital sovereignty and sustainable innovation. If you're attending, come say hi. We’d love to connect and chat about the future of open tech in Europe.

This #NGIFORUM panel on #governance is interesting. What is missing is that the is a native #openweb project that came directly out of the original ActivityPub outreach to the #EU

hamishcampbell.com/?s=OGB this so far has been ignored by the funders, you can see this in the link above. Q. When will we support native paths to balance the current #NGO and #geekproblem mess in the bureaucratic paths.

"What went wrong"!!! It is a good slogan. Yes #NGI it is a mess creating #techshit to feed the fashionistas. So good question.

Better #FOSS governance is a part of rebalancing this, so please look at the link above, thanks.

And if you want to be a prat about this - from a polemical view, hamishcampbell.com/maybe-we-do

hamishcampbell.com/?s=NLnet this link is about talking and working on the subject of this panel for last ten years. The is a LOT of feedback on this - working in a small way, failing in a big way path #geekproblem

@robin makes good points, that are "off-topic" which is good, what is on topic is too often pointless, so more off-topic please at these events :)

UPDATE: the is way too much #neoliberlisam "common sense" in this panel. It's as if they have no clue that this is a #deathcult

On the current talk, we need government to legislate to open up the current internet providers, both mobile and fixed, to change their networks to be more friendly to user, grassroots, lead p2p and local hosting. This will need #EU and national governments to shape this change by intervening in these markets, to open them to this native #openweb path.

This could be a positive way of unblocking the current hamishcampbell.com/?s=geekprob as the negative way is currently being blocked by the narrowness of current #NGI funding.
