Joshua McNeill<p>TIL that <a href="https://h4.io/tags/Kenner" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kenner</span></a>, <a href="https://h4.io/tags/Louisiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Louisiana</span></a> was originally called Cannes Brûlées, meaning burnt sugarcane. The French pronunciation is /kan bɾyle/ whereas Kenner is /kɛn əɹ/. It's hard to say what happened to the adjective as it was anglicized, but the sugarcane was preserved pretty well in there.</p><p>(Got this from the list of <a href="https://h4.io/tags/colonial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>colonial</span></a> censuses in Zitomersky (1974) that has one for "Cannes Bruslees" in 1722.)</p><p><a href="https://h4.io/tags/linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linguistics</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/languagechange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>languagechange</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/French" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>French</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/English" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>English</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/languagecontact" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>languagecontact</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/NewOrleans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NewOrleans</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/NOLA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NOLA</span></a></p>
Joshua McNeill<p>I had no idea that, in <a href="https://h4.io/tags/French" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>French</span></a>, <a href="https://h4.io/tags/DarthVader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DarthVader</span></a> is called <a href="https://h4.io/tags/DarkVador" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DarkVador</span></a>. It makes sense as both /θ/ and syllabic /ɹ/ would be difficult in French, but for a second I sort of took offense to the name change, lol</p><p><a href="https://h4.io/tags/StarWars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StarWars</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linguistics</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/phonetics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>phonetics</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/phonology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>phonology</span></a> <a href="https://h4.io/tags/languagecontact" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>languagecontact</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.premiere.fr/Series/News-Series/Skeleton-Crew-Nos-enfants-ne-savent-meme-pas-qui-est-Dark-Vador-" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">premiere.fr/Series/News-Series</span><span class="invisible">/Skeleton-Crew-Nos-enfants-ne-savent-meme-pas-qui-est-Dark-Vador-</span></a></p>
Joshua McNeill<p>I don't speak <a href="https://h4.io/tags/German" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>German</span></a>, but I understand very well what the announcer says at 0:46: "Kabayel ist in top form."</p><p>I've previously posted about how much <a href="https://h4.io/tags/English" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>English</span></a> is used by announcers in <a href="https://h4.io/tags/boxing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>boxing</span></a> in the Philippines, but I was not expected to hear this happen in <a href="https://h4.io/tags/Germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Germany</span></a>, at least not for a phrase like this.
