#Palestine / 2024 was the deadliest year on record for journalists with majority killed by Israel's occupation force in Gaza
The Committee to Protect Journalists (#CPJ) reports that 2024 saw the highest number of journalist killings since they began tracking data, with at least 124 journalists and media workers killed. A significant majority, nearly two-thirds, were Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in #Gaza. The CPJ documented 85 journalists and media workers killed in the Israel-Gaza war in 2024, and 78 in 2023.
The CPJ is investigating 20 additional killings where it believes Israel may have specifically targeted journalists. International humanitarian law considers journalists civilians, and targeting them in conflict is a war crime.

# Switzerland / Electronic Intifada's Ali Abunimah Detained
Ali Abunimah's arrest in #Zurich is attributed to different reasons in various reports. While The Electronic Intifada and other sources suggest it's due to a crackdown on pro-Palestine voices, framing it within a pattern of suppressing solidarity with Palestinians, Swiss authorities, as reported by NZZ, state Abunimah was arrested due to an existing entry ban. Security Director Mario Fehr is quoted calling Abunimah an "Islamist Jew hater" who poses a threat to Switzerland's internal and external security. NZZ further details accusations against Abunimah, including sharing Hamas content, denying sexual violence on October 7th, and describing Iranian attacks on Israel as "humanitarian acts".
While Mario Fehr is no longer affiliated with the Social Democratic Party (SP) and is now independent , his political positions are perceived by some as leaning towards the right. He left the SP citing its "leftward drift," and while in office, faced criticism from leftist groups like the Young Socialists and found support from the right-wing Islamophobic Swiss People's Party .

Anyways, in Swedish media and human rights circles, the plight of Dawit Isaak is raised with regularity. Professional football club Örgryte FC regularly carry banners with messages amplifying his plight, and so do the team's fans.
The Swedish government however, has been accused of not doing enough to secure his release.
