The Computer Networks Group researches and develops distributed infrastructure for secure communication and computation at all levels of the networking stack. Our past activities include work on sensor networks, autonomic operations of networks, bio- and chemically-inspired networking, as well as mobile code. The aim of the P2P Basel workshop is to bring together researchers and software builders to share insights and collaborate towards the sound and sustainable development of efficient eventually-consistent (offline-first) peer-to-peer systems. Examples of related projects of interest are Secure #Scuttlebutt , DAT/Hypercore , Cabal , #Tox, BitMessage , #IPFS , Socket Supply co., #OrbitDB , Earthstar , Willow , #Nostr , #Holochain , #P2Panda , #GNUnet , #Hyphanet , #Freenet , #Zeronet , #Retroshare , #NextGraph , #Web3 , #serverless , #maidsafe , #matrix , Other P2P projects that are based on stronger consistency models, such as Mass Market are also of interest.

The thing that gets me about #selfhosting is that you will never be able to #selfhost #DNS. You will never be free of big tech on the clear open Internet; we baked it into the lowest layer of the protocol. So unless you're self-hosting an #Onion, or #IPFS site I don't see the point in avoiding #cloud providers. It's like worrying about opsec while carrying a cellphone.

Torrent Freak reviews the latest EU Piracy Watchlist. I didn't know half of the stuff they mention. Ironically, it's more of a guide for pirating than a warning against piracy.

The new edition includes #IPFS, which is simply unfair.

IPFS is a communication protocol, which is not even famous for its privacy, I used it a lot in the past for p2p websites or hosting data as a group.

If IPFS is a piracy tool then HTML or any other digital media is as well.

#discord IS LITERALLY THE PROBLEM!

• It's worse than any #IRC, #Mumble or even the old #TeamSpeak & #Skype for that matter.

• It combines the disadvantages of #Forum, #paywalled #documentation, #chat and #voicechat with 0 redeeming qualities (unlike #Zulip & Mumble & #XMPP+#OMEMO) it's just an #InformationBlackhole!

I'm shure fecking #dread has better moderation and I'd rather use #MicrosoftTeams + #Slack cuz those at least have proper #moderation tools.

• And I'd rather subscribe to the #LKML and see my inbox getting hosed than using any shitty #SaaS!

Case in point: I'd rather #SelfHost all my comms infrastructure than to ever use something like Discord or any other #GDPR-violating SaaS that is just enshittification.

I'd rather recommend people to instead choose a tool that does everything but horrible to go with multiple smaller & good tools

somehow the google „AI“ says that Deno got special IPFS CIDs.
That sounds terrible not interoperable.

I suggest that #IPFS does not follow googles proposal and that a CID is the same in every language !!! (!)

One of the problems of #IPFS is that they never decide if they want to be "cool" or useful. The result is that their publications and products are riddled with buzzwords and self-compliments, but often forget the goal of IPFS.

The typical goal of IPFS is to be able to send a reference to content, instead of a reference to a server. But to see the *real* goal we have to think of **why** we do that.

How is one supposed to find files on #IPFS?

I love that it's based on #DHT of old https://docs.ipfs.tech/concepts/dht/#kademlia though in practice mediated by a central indexer (IPNI) https://docs.ipfs.tech/concepts/ipni/ .

But what made DHT useful in #eMule was the search by filename or other human-readable metadata, so of course they removed all of that!?

So you can't search a file by its checksum, let alone its filename. You need to know someone who already has the file, and ask them where to look.

Is anyone working on #P2P server software compatible with #ActivityPub? It seems natural to be able to donate network resources instead of cash, and would make services even more difficult to censor.

Hey #internet #cloud #web #infrastructure #persistence is there any #p2p or publicly supported content-addressable storage (#cas) solution? (Other than #IPFS, which I am aware of.)
The problem is that I eventually would want a (few) small binaries to be available "in perpetuity", i.e. not some specific content hosting service. The idea being that if that binary-exact file performs an important function, I'd like it to be hard to become unavailable or disappear.
