MPs on the Public Accounts Comm. have accused the HMRC as not being 'sufficiently curious' about the scope & range of tax evasion;

one interesting pointer is that before making online platforms liable for the VAT from overseas sellers the HMRC had estimated such evasion was costing around £300m a year; when imposed the tax take increased by £1.5bn (five times as much).

MPs rightly think this clearly demonstrates the HMRC underestimates evasion & needs to raise its game.

in the last year, the HMRC investigated 268 Code of Practice 9 cases in 2023-4.... which is down from 669 investigated in 2018-19.... now you might conclude there is much less serious tax fraud taking place, or (perhaps) the HMRC is losing interest in complex & difficult to investigate cases when they can get quicker results investigating individuals who have less effective (or indeed no) legal representation.

Or of course the HMRC was 'called off' by the previous Govt.?

What is VAT1 and Why It’s Crucial for Your Business

If you’re running a business in the UK, understanding VAT1 is essential, especially as your business grows. VAT1 is the form you need to complete when registering your business for VAT with HMRC. Whether your taxable turnover has crossed the VAT threshold of £85,000 or you’re opting for voluntary registration, the VAT1 form is your gateway to compliance.

Filing the VAT1 form might seem daunting, but it’s a critical step in ensuring your business operates within legal requirements. Once registered, you’ll receive a VAT registration certificate, which allows you to charge VAT on your products or services and reclaim VAT on eligible business expenses.

Why does this matter? Proper VAT registration not only keeps you compliant but also enhances your business credibility, especially when dealing with VAT-registered customers and suppliers.

Are you in the process of VAT registration or thinking about it? Learn more about the VAT1 form and how it impacts your business on our latest blog.

So… won our dispute with HMRC over R&D tax credits. A year of worry for nothing. It must have cost them more to dispute our claim than the claim was worth.

Other developers & inventors have been caught in this campaign by HMRC.

Any R&D is huge investment of time & often an individuals personal money.

It should be encouraged by government. Not used as a clumsy way to claw back tax to fill a hole they created paying Baroness Mone or whatever.

This is a weird one.
HMRC are basically asking us to lie to them about December pay. Recording a different pay day than the actual pay day, because it could impact people on universal credit. That sounds like a very broken system.
It is also a tad unclear as they talk of normal or contractual pay day. We “normally” and “contractually” pay staff a week early in December. So I am not clear what they want me to put on RTI!
