Some time ago I wrote about using Helix editor on FreeBSD. I liked the „batteries included“ approach and I was curious to see whether Helix could be an actual replacement for Neovim.

I really tried and I forced myself to like Helix. And yes, Helix’s approach might be perfect for newbies who have never worked before with vim. But at some point I found myself on a customer’s server, desperately pressing ‚d‘ and wondering why it didn’t delete the character under my cursor. At this point I decided to dump Helix. The fact that some commands are slightly different, but not completely, made it hard for me to switch between systems and made me look like a complete idiot when editing a config while sharing the screen with a client.

BTW is there meanwhile an option to run lua-language-server on FreeBSD? I am using kickstart with nvim and it’s complaining that it can’t install the lsp because it’s not supported on this platform.

I use #kakoune. I am exploring #helix (very lightly so far).

What are your opinions on the two editors? Would you highly recommend one over the other?

I've been playing with #nvim for the past month, but I'm pretty close to giving up on it. While I like the general editing model, I find it quite frustrating you need a ton of plugins to get something basic done. Getting started with #Emacs seems trivial by comparison. (and I know that's not easy)

#Helix seems like a very promising (and simple) alternative to nvim, but it misses some basic functionality that makes it a bit impractical right now. It has huge potential, though, and I can easily see it becoming a major player in the real of programmer's editors.

Preparing to play my music live: guitar sounds.

Originally I exported my guitar patches for each song from Helix Native to my floor unit, tweaking them as I went. This quickly got tedious and I've realized that in a live setting 90% of the nuances are lost and it's going to be WAY easier if I just dial in good baseline sounds and use them most of the time.

I'm using Helix as my editor of the year 2025. Currently, Emacs, Vim, and Helix keybindings coexist. In particular, Vim and Helix keybindings are competing for a better spot in my brain. #helix-editor #vim

#Helix (the editor) now has a file browser, very similar to the #vim telescope file browser.

I was super skeptical of this feature but the implementation is just really elegant, simple and reuses existing UI instead of adding UX complexity.

The File Explorer landed on Helix, and I’m delighted. Although it’s a minimalist file explorer, it effectively accomplishes its purpose. Perhaps it can expand its capabilities from here

Played with a combination of #Fish, #Ghostty, #Zellij, and #Helix(#hx) for a development environment. It’s cool enough to attract many YouTubers seeking more viewers, but it’s just another hyped, fancy-looking environment for seasoned developers who know what they’re doing and what they need.

@metasyn @yvan I agree Lua, Telescope and LSP where my main reasons to move too... Even if the #helix users will yell and say: "Yeah that or this plugin crashed my #Neovim experience"

In reality, it happened to me twice, it was fixed in less than an hour each time.

Have been using the Zed editor for the last few months as something between an IDE and an editor. I was very positive about its future as well. However, after this time, I am very disappointed with its basic features as both an editor and IDE. Now I am switching to the Helix editor. #zed #helix
