Using a Tablet as a Second Monitor in Ubuntu is Actually Pretty Easy

Today I learn that it’s pretty easy to use an iPad or an Android tablet as a second monitor with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Not just “access your desktop” but “use it to extend your desktop” as though it were a regular, physically connected external monitor. I know: I’m supposed to be on the pulse of stuff like this and yet, here I am, monsieur slow-train, only learning about this capability cos it got mentioned it in a Reddit thread that, mercifully, passed before my eyes. Naturally I had to dive it to try it out first hand.

How to Disable UI Animations in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

For a quick and effective way to make Ubuntu feel instantly faster you can disable UI animations. In fact, turning animations off in Ubuntu is a guaranteed way to get the best performance from the system on older and lower spec’d computers. Many desktop effects, while pretty, require beefier system resources to run. Desktop animations in Ubuntu —heck, any major end-user OS serve a purpose. They can often be over the top but they’re not entirely pointless. They help make the desktop feel more fluid and graceful in use. But this can come at a cost: speed — though more :sys_more_orange:

A Nifty Dynamic Wallpaper Maker for GNOME 42

Ditch the scripts and erase the elaborate terminal commands ‘cos the following GTK4 app makes it super easy to create your own dynamic wallpapers to use in GNOME 42 (and above). Woah, woah: not the old kind of dynamic wallpapers. Awesome though those timed slideshows were/are I’m fully aware apps to create them aren’t new (though weirdly I’ve never written about any 💁🏻‍♂️). Anyway, this is a new Dynamic Wallpaper creator for GNOME 42. To recap: vanilla GNOME 42 comes with a proper standardised dark mode implementation that all modern GNOME apps respect. It’s pretty cool. As part of that :sys_more_orange:

By default the scaling factor of the login screen does not match the system scaling factor on Fedora Silverblue 36 with GNOME 42.

To make it match:

sudo cp ~/.config/monitors.xml /var/lib/gdm/.config/

Although you will have to do this manually every time you change the system scaling factor.

Not sure why this is not done for you automatically.

Damn, just playing around with the latest #Fedora36 beta and #Gnome42

This is fast, like "the interface of my vm runs smoother and apps launch quicker than on my main pc, that vm is running on" - fast.

Next up I will test out the new rdp based remote access. If the only performs half as well as what I have seen so far, it is byebye #Ubuntu and hello #fedora

GNOME 42 Released, This is What’s New

The GNOME project today released GNOME 42, the latest version of its open source desktop environment. And what a release it is! New features, UI tweaks, and performance gains are a staple part of every new GNOME desktop update, but none more so than here, in GNOME 42. GNOME 42 source code is available to download from the GNOME website from today. However, most Linux users will want to wait for their distro maintainers to package it up and push it out to them. You Can Install GNOME’s New Terminal and Text Editor Apps on Ubuntu 22.04

GNOME 42‘s new Console and Text Editor apps are available to install in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Don’t get too excited by that sentence, mind. Neither Console nor Text Editor have bagged themselves a spot on Ubuntu’s (increasingly engorged) .iso. But both tools are, along with a bevvy of other GTK4/libadwaita ports, available in the Ubuntu 22.04 repo. All you have to do to try them out is run sudo apt install gnome-console gnome-text-editor (or take the scenic route by way of the Ubuntu Software app) and you’re away. But are they actually any good? Well, yes — but you have :sys_more_orange:
