In 2020, #Trump asked #governors of #states to deploy their #NationalGuard troops to DC to *quell* #protests after #GeorgeFloyd’s murder by Minneapolis police officers.

At the time, Trump also threatened to invoke the #InsurrectionAct for protests – an intervention rarely seen in modern American history. But then #Defense Secy Mark Esper pushed back, saying the #law should be invoked “only in the most urgent & dire of situations.”

This time around we’ve got #PeteHegseth in that role.

#Trump & his aides have often lamented that not enough was done by #Minnesota’s governor to *quell* #protests over the #murder of #GeorgeFloyd in 2020. During a campaign rally in 2023, Trump made clear he was not going to hold back in a 2nd term. “You’re supposed to not be involved in that, you just have to be asked by the governor or the mayor to come in—the next time, I’m not waiting,” he said.

Five years after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a cracker murderpig named Derek Chauvin, it's easy to look at police murder and use of force statistics, as well as a white nationalist Trump regime, and conclude the 2020 uprising failed; which is precisely what a pro-cop liberal "reformist" chatterati is doing. The reality is however that "a system cannot fail those it was never designed to protect" and the lack of legislative progress to protect our civil rights from police abuses falls on the elected reformers not advocates and abolitionists in the streets. The 2020 Uprising taught us to band together because we are all targets in for the carceral state in the right circumstances; and just in time too, because Donald Trump is dead serious about transforming law enforcement into his own fascist army.

The Widening Maw of Racialized Police Violence

"The reality is that Downmarket Mussolini has only been back in the White House for four and a half months, and these police killing statistics go back years into a Biden administration that was elected in part, to specifically stop racialized police violence in response to the protests; the city where George Floyd was slowly murdered on camera by a sociopathic cop is in a Democratic-controlled State, run by one of the most progressive Governors in America. For a larger liberal establishment in the United States that had no answer for Trump at the ballot box to point at the Kelpto Kaiser’s racist authoritarian regime and declare the movement against police violence and white supremacist policing has failed, is one part deflection, and one part scapegoating. It is ultimately reductive to argue that the 2020 George Floyd protests were by themselves responsible for the broader fascist “white-lash” driving Trump’s second rise to power in an already white supremacist America, and disempowering to believe organized resistance against that white supremacy accomplished nothing merely because a state that was never designed to protect racialized people, or the labor class in general, refused to take meaningful action against police violence. Those hard-fought hours in the streets opened a broad swathe of society’s eyes to the racist and violent nature of American policing, taught communities across the globe how to organize in the face of state-sanctioned repression, and helped make so many young people “woke” that the fascist Trump regime is trying to make “wokeness” illegal. We cannot un-see what we have observed, or unknow what we learned during the uprising, and the affliction of knowing cannot be cured with rubber bullets and tear gas."

Remember that not all dead soldiers should be remembered fondly. The US military was involved in the genocide of Native Americans.

Joy-Ann Reid reveals the poignant origins of Memorial Day, initially Decoration Day, founded by Black freedmen to honor Union soldiers. There's irony in celebrating Confederate figures over Civil War victors. Recent events, sparked by George Floyd’s murder, have encouraged recognizing contributions from women and people of color, highlighted by the renaming of nine military bases. Reid calls for inclusivity in honoring America’s military legacy. Read more: joyannreid.com/p/on-memory-par #MemorialDay #GeorgeFloyd #CharlesRangel #History #Justice #Equality #NamingCommission

Tampa remembers George Floyd 5 years later

On May 25, 2024, activists gathered in Tampa Fl's Curtis Hixon Park to remember George Floyd. They also commemorated the Uprising that followed his murder, and reminded everyone that locking up one murderous cop hasn't ended police brutality and torture. A speaker pointed out that the ICE scum at the Worchester, MA attack took down a 16 year old girl, shoved her face into the pavement-and shoved a knee into her neck just like what another cop did to George Floyd. At least this time their victim survived this brutal assault.

It was on May 25 2020, convicted Minneapolis killer cop Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. The murder weapon was his knee in George's neck-for over 9 minutes. Fighting began in Minneapolis itself almost immediately therafter, and three nights later the 3ed precinct was liberated and burned to the ground.

By the following weekend, the Uprising had erupted from coast to coast. I was in DC at that time. On Friday, May 29 2020 Trump was scared into his bunker by protests outside. The following day police cars were smashed and burned as protesters fought to gain control of Lafayette Square. Another Night of Fire followed on May 31. On June 1 came Trump's infamous Bible-thumping after Federal cops assaulted protesters to clear a few blocks. A curfew led to more fighting that night. Sporadic ighting raged back and forth for much of the rest of June in DC.

Famously we had the Albert Pike statue teardown on Juneteenth, followed by the attempt to pull down the Andrew Jackson statue in front of the White House. The following night, Black Lives Matter Plaza changed hands several times as the fighting raged back and forth.

Similar battles were fought in seemingly the majority of cities, DC was very intense, and Portland, OR even more so.

"Where once the bold yellow letters of Black Lives Matter shone brightly on the asphalt of 16th Street in the US capital, there are now SUVs. The lettering was removed in March after Republicans in Congress threatened to cut off federal funding to Washington."

"According to the non-profit Mapping Police Violence project, the police killed at least 1,260 people in the US in 2024 — more than in any year over the past decade. The project says that in the US Black people are 2.8 times more likely to be killed by police than white people."

Deutsche Welle · 5 years since George Floyd murder, Black lives still matterBy Aline Spantig

George Floyd was murdered. That is a fact. Blaming his death on anything other than murder by police is a lie.

Lying about the murder of George Floyd is a cynical, malicious effort to provide cover for ongoing police violence and to promote white nationalism.

George Floyd's life mattered. Remembering the truth of how he was murdered matters.
