Luke
Australian based funeral doom collective Spiine released their 4 track, 1 hour debut Tetraptych earlier this year and now it has had a streaming release as well.

Sesca Scaarba (Virgin Black) and Xen (ex Ne Obliviscaris) deliver a true, slow, crushing experience that only funeral doom can deliver. Luke
For this #Saturdoom I will share with you an artist that doesn’t use guitars in their music, a first for me.

Slovenian act Forged Relics released their debut Portal recently. It’s a glacially slow, crushingly heavy #FuneralDoom record that, as promised, does not feature guitars in any way.

It consists of vocals (stately clean and guteral grunts), drums and a church organ. Luke
My #SaturDoom song for this week is from the new Dutch #doom outfit Structure who just released their debut last week. The album herritage features heavy growling #DeathDoom with a very layered structure to it. At times songs get so low and slow that it becomes #FuneralDoom. A very interesting listen to be sure and this record is starting to live rent free in my brain.

👥 Structure
💿 Herritage
🎶 Until The Last Gasp

https://song.link/i/1807130204

Luke
My own addition to this #Saturdoom is a dark and slow one. Angry Metal Guy
Funeral – Gospel of Bones Review

By Cherd

It’s a tricky business being the only remaining original member of a band more than thirty years after its creation. I don’t know how many members you have to replace before you’re in Ship of Theseus Paradox territory, but surely Anders Eek is there with his long-running Norwegian doom outfit Funeral. I suppose it’s one thing if the last remaining OG is the vocalist, since the human voice, unfairly or not, will always be the default through-line. It almost doesn’t matter what the music is doing, if the voice is familiar, it’s easy to say “See? It’s the same band.” But Anders Eek is not the vocalist. He’s the drummer. On Gospel of Bones, Funeral’s seventh LP, bassist Rune Gandrud joins Eek as the only returning members from 2021’s Praesentialis In Aeterum.1 Unstable as the band’s lineup has been, they’ve managed to remain a respected voice in doom circles, thanks to a solid discography and their role as early pioneers of funeral doom.

So how do the new members affect Funeral’s sound on Gospel of Bones? We’ll go from least to most impactful. It’s not quite fair to say that new guitarist Stian Kråbøl is a plug-and-play option since he’s obviously skilled at laying down a big doom riff, but Funeral have always had those, and Anders Eek is the main songwriter these days. Strings specialist Sareeta (Ingvild Strønen Kaare) has a much larger impact, as she alternates between violins and the traditional Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle, heard in cuts like “Procession of Misery.” Where the band may have relied on programmed symphonic elements in the past, Sareeta now fills songs out with live string tones ranging from warm to strident. This would be a significant enough change, but we haven’t discussed new vocalist Eirik P. Krokfjord. First, look at what a pleasant, eager looking fellow he is. If you hit play on the embed already, you’re probably trying to reconcile that cherubic visage with the bass-range operatic singing that marks a massive shift in sound from the last Funeral record. Between Krokfjord’s vibrato, Sareeta’s strings, and the complete absence of death growls, Gospel of Bones drops all remainder of death doom in favor of gothic classicism, like a cross between My Dying Bride and Candlemass.

Assuming you’re already down with gothic funeral doom in general, how much you take to Gospel of Bones will rely completely on your reaction to Krokfjord. In spite of my usual aversion to cheese in metal, I find it works. Funeral have always been good at pulling drama out of slow tempos, and when the riffs, violins and Krokfjord’s operatic flair are firing on all cylinders, as they are on opener “Too Young to Die” or “My Own Grave,” the results are Wagnerian. This drama is amplified on the few occasions when Kråbøl is allowed to cut loose with upbeat riffing (“These Rusty Nails”) and soloing (“Når Kisten Senkes”). Altogether, Eek has assembled a band and sound that helps set Funeral apart from the increasingly crowded field of doom metal in a similar way to how Tragedies stuck out in the mid-nineties.

That said, 67 minutes is a lot of operatic singing to digest. Krokfjord obviously has range beyond his bass bellowing, but he rarely uses it. By the time “To Break All Hearts of Men” and closer “Three Dead Men” roll around, with Krokfjord singing in a detached, straightforward style, it seems oddly late in the game to introduce variation. Way back in the opener, Sareeta sings counter-melody on “Too Young to Die.” It works nicely, and I’m not sure why they don’t use it more. There are also a couple moments when the singing strays past dramatic and into silly, like the overpronunciations on “Procession of Misery.” Suddenly Krokfjord sounds less Wagnerian and more like monastic singing when Brother Johan forgets that being fancy is sinful and gets a little carried away. Gospel of Bones is stylistically concentrated. Enough so that it took me several listens to realize nothing, in particular, stands out from a songwriting perspective. There are no bad songs, but nothing here is so well written that it transcends the overall sound.

As with most off-kilter vocal choices, Krokfjord’s contributions to Funeral’s seventh full-length will likely make or break one’s enjoyment of it. For the most part, they work for me, and the interplay between heavy riffs and Sareeta’s lovely violin and fiddle playing is a treat throughout Gospel of Bones. It’s all just on the edge of being too much style over substance, but I can foresee occasions when this will scratch a specific itch.

Rating: 3.0/5.0
DR: 9 | Format Reviewed: 320 kbps mp3
Label: Season of Mist
Websites: funeraldoom.bandcamp.com | facebook.com/funeralnorway
Releases Worldwide: October 18th, 2024

#2024 #30 #Candlemass #Doom #DoomMetal #Funeral #FuneralDoom #GospelOfBones #MyDyingBide #NorwegianMetal #Oct24 #Review #Reviews #SeasonOfMist

Angry Metal Guy
Föhn – Condescending Review

By Steel Druhm

2024 hasn’t been the greatest year for doom thus far save for Crypt Sermon’s massive missive. I find myself largely swimming in the death and trad swamps, but I crave big, molar-rattling doom to round out my unhealthy listening regime. Fortunately, Greek funeral doom act Föhn have arrived to help with their mammoth debut Condescending. Borrowing from acts like Esoteric and Ataraxie, Föhn deliver monolithic long-form compositions of lumbering grimness with enough sheer mass to crush a steel factory. But rather than merely recycle the same old sounds, the band adds their own unique flair by incorporating manic, unhinged saxophone blasts that sound like they escaped from a Sigh album only to get locked in the Gimp Box in Imperial Triumphant’s sax dungeon. There are plenty of the expected doom tropes present, but the dark jazz element provides interesting textures, sometimes nightmarish, other times soothing, and always atmospheric. The result is an album that feels familiar yet alien enough to intrigue and keep you anxiously awaiting further developments.

In a show of ball-cocky bravado, Condescending opens with the nearly 14-minute “Bereft,” and trust me when I tell you that you’ll remember your time spent with this rampaging beast. This is gargantuan doom designed to convey a sense of existential dread, and it does so with crushing, abrasive riffs that show no mercy. Running over the top of the guitar are schizophrenic sax lines that scream and caterwaul like demons from the Ninth Level of Hell. It makes for an unsettling soundscape but as the song lurches forward, the traditional doom idioms gain prominence, and earth-shaking death roars guide you deeper into the void. Subtle melodic interludes break up the death march here and there and eventually, the sax returns to provide a melancholic and poignant counterpart to the 50-ton riffs. It’s all highly effective and emotionally evocative. This may well be the Doom Song o’ the Year. Not to be outdone easily, “A Day After” opens with ominous ambient droning and the sounds of children playing, creating cognitive dissonance and a sense of dread before the riffs arrive to oppress you with suffocating mass. Subdued, minimalist melodic strumming provides a brief respite from the monolithic riffs and cavernous, reverb-heavy death roars, and though it’s very much the classic funeral doom sound and style, Föhn execute it very well without relying on the wild card saxophone for texture this time. It’s just you and them in a dank, dark space for 13-plus minutes and it will damage your calm.

17-minute mega-closer “Persona” uses harrowing soundbites of a woman discussing the nightmarish underworld of drug addiction and sex trafficking, overlaid with sounds of women crying and screaming, undergirded with guitar lines that remind me of Headshrinker’s massive Callous Indifference. To say it’s impactful damns it with faint praise. Later, the sax returns to add noir-esque atmosphere, forlorn and downtrodden. While Condescending is intensely gripping, it’s a lot to digest in one sitting at a portly 57-plus minutes. It’s easy to get drawn into the world Föhn creates and lose track of time, but there’s ample room for trimming and tightening. “The Weight of Nothing” is good and more urgent than its brethren, but it doesn’t contain enough inspiration to cover all its 12-plus minutes. Whacking a few minutes off the closer would be helpful too. Excess padding aside, I can’t say enough about the mixing/mastering courtesy of Greg Chandler of Esoteric. The sound is deep and vibrant with the heavy riffs feeling so damn massive and the drums feeling warm and organic. This thing sounds great as it pushes you toward a psychotic break.

Georgios Schoinianakis handles guitar and drums and does an impressive job with both. His riffing is powerful and punishing, using dissonance as a cudgel. His minimalist melodic flourishes play good cop here, allowing faint rays of light in this vast ocean of darkness and despair. New Ocean of Grief vocalist Nicos Vlachakis delivers a monumental performance with thunderous death roars and growls that feel primal and foundational. He’s used somewhat sparingly but he electrifies the material with his sub-basement doom booming. The saxophonist responsible for so much of the atmosphere and raw emotion is uncredited, which is a damn shame. The playing on “Bereft” is simply awe-inspiring and deserves accolades.1 To the band’s credit, the sax element isn’t overused or made gimmicky. It’s there when needed and packs a punch way above its weight.

Condescending is a highly accomplished debut taking classic funeral doom templates and adding just enough innovation to stand out. It flirts with greatness and great moments are indeed present, but bloat and the occasional underdeveloped idea deprive Föhn of a higher score. Get ears on this and feel the pain of human existence

Rating: 3.5/5.0
DR: 8 | Format Reviewed: 320 kbps mp3
Label: Hypaethral Records
Websites: bandcamp.com/album/condescending | facebook.com/foehnofficial
Releases Worldwide: August 23rd, 2024

#2024 #35 #Ataraxie #Aug23 #Condescending #DroneMetal #Esoteric #Föhn #FuneralDoom #FuneralDoomMetal #GreekMetal #HypaethralRecords #Review #Reviews #Sigh #Swans
